(no subject)

The green kid is outside, on a clear, flat area of grass, shuffling around aimlessly.

At least, it seems aimless until you notice that his feet are moving in a pattern, and he's counting under his breath.

"One two three, one two three, one two three, one two three..." Forward, side, together, forward, side, together, back, side, together, forward, turn, together...

Flat | Top-Level Comments Only

It does look a little...odd, on first glance.

"Hey, Enzo!" Arnold calls as he drifts over. "What're you doing?"

"Hey, Arnold," Enzo calls over his shoulder. "I'm, uh..." He widens his steps to make it clearer. "Practicing dancing."

"Oh, cool! You're not looking half bad."

Arnold has minimal experience with formal dancing, but when you know what he's doing Enzo doesn't look stupid or anything.

"Thanks! It's not too different from doing a kata."

Arnold'll believe that. It doesn't really look much different, if you think about it.

"Might be easier with a partner, though."

"Yeah, it is."

Enzo eyes Arnold thoughtfully and smirks.

Arnold gives him a rather long-suffering look.

"Surely there's some other girl in the bar you know well enough to practice with."

"Yeah, I know a few. Dunno if I could find any, though. You know how this place is."

Besides, Arnold would look so cute dancing the girl part! Muahahaha.

The long-suffering look is supplemented by a long-suffering sigh.

"You're going to have to walk me through the steps once or twice."

Enzo laughs and moves to stand opposite Arnold. He shan't bother with dance position yet, don't worry.

"Do what I do but backward, okay? So, like, if I step forward with my left foot, you step back with your right."

He steps forward with his left foot.

And Arnold steps back with his right.

"Like that?"

Enzo nods and steps his right foot forward and to the right, so his feet are shoulder-width apart.

So Arnold moves his left foot back and to the left.

Mirror game?

Very much so! Except that the reflection keeps its distance.

Enzo brings his left foot over next to his right. "That's the basic step. One-two-three."

"Okay, cool. What's the beat?"

"Waltz. One-two-three-one-two-three..." He continues his demonstration, stepping backward on his right foot and proceeding to make a full box-step.

Arnold continues to mirror him, falling into step after a few misfires.

"Good so far?"

"Uh-huh! Just make sure you don't step twice on the same foot, that messed me up too. You always alternate."

"Right," says Arnold, and starts paying more attention to which foot he's stepping with.

Left-right-left right-left-right left-right-left right-left-right...

"You're doing the girl part, but it's not really different, you just start on the other foot," Enzo explains as he goes.

"Shouldn't be too hard," Arnold says thoughtfully.

"Ready to try for real?"

"Sure. You hold my left hand and put your right hand on my shoulder or my arm."

He bows deeply, trying to look solemn, and holds his arms in the appropriate position.

Arnold is going to have some terrible favor to ask one day, and it will be revenge for this.

He takes Enzo's hand and arm like he was told, but doesn't curtsy. Yes, he's seen most of the girls in his class do it before, but he's not a girl and so there.

Bah! No fun.

Enzo puts his right hand on Arnold's back. "Okay, since I'm leading, I kinda tell you where to go with my hands." He pushes a bit on Arnold's hand, then tugs on his back. "You see?"

This is the part he really needs to practise. He'll be teaching Dani as much on the fly as Arnold.

"I think so." Arnold shifts a little and looks at Enzo expectantly. "You start."
