Bored Bill is bored.

Against better judgment he asks Bar for something to do and she gives him a box and a root beer float.

Lifting the box he arches a brow.

"Really? C'mon."

The float disappears and his eyes widen.

"Hey, okay. I asked, I'll give it a try."

The float reappears along with a bowl of M&Ms.

Smiling Bill opens the box and sets up the game, his first attempt careening off at an odd angle into someones drink.

"Oh damn, sorry."

Suspicion starts a-brewin'. But she's not going to allow herself to crack the charade this early, so she decides to play along.

"Sure," she decides, surprised at her own admission, and makes her first attempt.

It's wide and goes skittering off the opposite edge of the bar.

Oblivious Bill is oblivious.

He watches her take a shot and chuckles.

"I don't remember it bein' this tricky at all."

He tries again and manages to wing the corner of the box. Closer, but still no cigar.

"I know what you mean," Beckett agrees, really starting to get into it at this point.

Her next attempt barely skims over the edge of the box and she releases a huff in slight frustration.

"First laser tag, now this? Do you have some secret inner child that I don't know about, Castle?"

He takes his time lining up his next shot, eyeballing the distance from the piece to the box, carefully applying pressure to the edge and...

"Ha!"

It's only a five point score but hey, it's something at least.

Grinning, he fist pumps in the air then freezes when her last words register.

"Huh?"

"Come on," she murmurs, shooting him the kind of look that only he gets lately.

But when his expression doesn't change, realization strikes.

"You're not Rick Castle."

"Rick?"

He shakes his head quickly.

"Nah-uh, I'm Bill. Pardy."

Okay, so he's been called Mal, Kevin and now Rick? What the hell, is there some crazy copy machine going off somewhere or something?

She shakes her head, grinning.

"Sorry. You're just a dead ringer for this guy I work with."

"Oh no, it's all right I just... " He takes a quick look around as if to spot this new twin then looks back at her. "I never heard of him."

He scratches his ear he lets out a light laugh.

"I outta be used to this sorta thing by now. S'just weird. An' I'm sorry, what's your name?"

"Well, if he finds out he has a lookalike, he'll probably want to meet you," Beckett admits.

"Oh. I'm Detective Beckett - Kate."

"Well, I'd like to meet him now, too." He smiles and it brightens when he hears her profession.

"Detective? I'm sheriff back home, Wheelsy, South Carolina, 2008 for me."

"New York City, 2009," she answers, grinning a little wider.

"South Carolina, huh? That's got to be a different kind of pace."

"New York?" He repeats, impressed.

"I'm sure. Wheelsy's just a small town so it's quiet, most of the time."

A shadow crosses his features but he doesn't let it stay. The troubles that were have passed and he's not going to dwell on them.

"You must handle a lotta rough cases in the city."

"I deal with the cases that are a little more... unusual," Beckett admits. "But they can still get pretty hairy."

Last week got intense, what with her being nearly shot and all.

Getting shot is no fun at all.

Her job, though, sounds very interesting and his curiousity is obviously piqued.

"Really? What kinds of things do you deal with?"

"I can't get into too much detail," Beckett says, "but the last case we took on involved a body that had been frozen."

"Frozen? Like hypothermia?"

That doesn't sound too unusual to him.

Not that a whole lot of people freeze to death in Wheelsy, but still...

"Frozen," Beckett replies, "like in a freezer."

Okay, so that is unusual.

"Who the hell would freeze a body?"

Beat, and a horrified look.

"You don't think they were gonna eat it, do you?"

"No, no," she replies reassuringly.

"It had nothing to do with cannibalism, I promise. But I'm afraid I can't get into the exact details of the case."

He nods, relieved and understanding.

"Well I hope you figure it out an' catch who did it. That's pretty messed up for someone t'do that."

There's so many questions he has now about it but somehow manages to hold them back.

Changing the subject before his curiosity gets the better of him he asks, "So how long you been comin' here?"

"This is... the third time," Beckett realizes, and for some reason, she's incredibly comfortable with that fact.

Maybe it's because Castle isn't here to steal cherries and make comments about her reaction to this new and exciting environment.

"What about you?"

Bill does tend to be a lot less annoying than Castle can be, but come on Beckett, you know he's growing on you.

Or not. Time will tell.

"Oh yeah? You got the rules an' all of that already?"

Scratching his ear he has a drink of his rootbeer float and thinks a minute.

"I been comin' an' goin'... wow, three years now."

Maybe she's starting to feel a little more comfortable with that fact, too.

"No sex, no grudges, no violence," she replies, rattling them off one by one.

"Well, that just makes me look sad in comparison," Beckett admits.

He nods, glad she knows the basics. He's not that great at explaining things.

"Not at all. Especially because you seem to be takin' it all so well. It ain't an easy place to get used to."

"Maybe because I haven't seen half the things you've seen in your three years." Beckett grins and makes another attempt, this one successful, and briefly celebrates.

"I'm giving it time."
