Lorne is...feeling out of sorts.

Which generally means it's time to take a break, so he's rather pleased to find himself in Milliways tonight. For a given value of 'pleased'.

The nice thing about Milliways, he figures, is that you can drink as much as you like, sleep off the hangover, and be back at work every bit as fresh as when you left.

So there's an Air Force major, at the bar, with a half-full pint of beer and two shots of tequila lined up.

"Yeah, me too," Lorne says.

And then, because he's getting dangerously close to morose, "So you've got someone too, you said? What's he like?"

Asher nods, a hint of a smile lighting up his face.

"He is here, too. From my world, though he was bound until recently, I know not why. He is...young, and lovely." Smitten Asher is smitten.

Lorne gets a slightly wistful smile. "Young and lovely. Good combination, that."

Asher laughs.

"You are young, Lorne, do not think otherwise. When you have seen six centuries pass, then you may bemoan your youth passing."

One of Lorne's eyebrows shoots up, but he's seen stranger things in Milliways.

"Not what I was thinking, actually. Though I'm not as young as I used to be."

"None of us are, in our minds, at least." He shrugs.

"And what were you thinking, then?" He cocks his head.

He smirks. "Well...I'm not getting any younger, and Jack's not getting any older. It's...weird sometimes. He doesn't mind, but sometimes I do."

"Was he younger than you, when he died?" Asher, of course, has the same problem in reverse. Nathaniel will age slower, as a lycanthrope, but he will still grow older and die.

"A little, yeah," Lorne says. "But it gets more every year, and someday..."

Someday Lorne will die, and he has no guarantee he'll end up here when he does.

"If you live your life waiting for 'someday', it will arrive, and you will curse the life you wasted." Asher points out.

Lorne shrugs. "Kind of my job to worry about 'someday'. Hard to turn that off sometimes."

"What is your job?"

"Air Force," Lorne says. "I'm XO of a military base."

"A heavy responsibility indeed," Asher nods. He is XO of a sort, himself - being a Master of the City's second is no small task. But that he does not share - even here, he would not publicise his role.

Lorne chuckles dryly. "'Specially when your CO has a knack for trying to get himself killed."

Asher frowns. "Does he wish to end his life? Surely he is not fit for command..."

[ooc: Mun's brain exploding at pup talking about other pup with no knowledge of each other...]

Lorne smiles. "Nah. Not like that. He's just...reckless."

[ooc: *pets*]

Asher is still frowning.

"A reckless leader is almost as bad as a suicidal one. To take risks is good, but unnecessarily..." he shrugs.

"Reckless with his own life," Lorne clarifies. "Not with anyone else's."

He feels like he should defend Sheppard somehow. He may be reckless, but Lorne's never had a CO who commands loyalty and inspires trust the way Sheppard does.

"He's got a lucky streak a mile wide."

"It will not last him forever," Asher murmurs.

Lorne snorts softly into his pint.

"Yeah, tell me about it."

This is why he loses sleep when he's in Atlantis.

"And so you watch out for him, for fear it may run out soon," Asher nods. "As it should be."

"Somebody's gotta do it," Lorne says.

Teyla helps. As does Ronon, but it's not quite the same.

"And I am sure you do it ably."

He shrugs. "I do what I can. He's still alive. That's got to count for something, right?"
