The Bar has an uncanny ability to sense when Ianto comes into Milliways to brood: she always asks him to bartend on those days. He supposes this is a good thing: it keeps him from dwelling too much in his own head.

There's nothing wrong with playing to his own strengths, too.

"For the Rift," Jack echoes with a sigh, focusing on the important issue.

What he thinks is the important issue.

"Trouble's all we can expect, but I was hoping you might get a quiet period while the seal was fresh."

"No supersized demons," Ianto reassures him.

"Good, I have dibs on those," Jack says, completely straight-faced.

Ianto reaches over the bar to take his hand and squeezes his fingers.

"I can't even make a joke," he says quietly.

Jack squeezes gently, gaze still calm and level, but his voice is fainter.



"Somtimes it's easier," he says.

Ianto nods, still holding his hand, and then smiles a bit as a napkin appears on the bar top with a message that the Bar is rested.

"I think I'm done here," he says and looks up at Jack. "Do you want to . . . go for a walk or something? Just . . . I just want to be with you for a while."

Jack smiles as well, looking at the napkin, and nods.

"Yeah," he says. "Where shall we go?"

Ianto comes around the bar and takes his hand again. He fusses with Jack's collar a little as he says, "How about along the lake shore a bit? Maybe find a place to kick back and relax . . ."

Ianto can't quite say "I'm going to snog you silly" but he can certainly intend it.

And oh, does he intend it.

"Sounds good," says Jack, picking up his coat and accepting Ianto's nonverbal fussing without comment.

Ianto catches his hand and leads him out the back door, towards the lake.
