Cal is not impressed by any of this.

There is an eyepatch on the seat of the chair next to him, and the fabric of his blousy white shirt bears evidence of much exasperated plucking.

Someone wanna tell him to lighten up?

"Fuck sympathy. I'm wearing leather pants."

Yes, that is a scowl on Cal's face.

"I...don't see why this is a problem?"

"Only jerks wear leather pants. They're even gayer than the shirt." These two sentiments are not, in fact, meant to be related, though it would be understandable if someone thought otherwise.

"But it'd protect you from wind-chill."

Cal winces. "Yeah, but it would chafe."

"That's why they are lined."

The pilot is really, really not being at all sympathetic here.

"Hey, how do you know anything about my pants?" Cal inquires, so very innocently.

"I don't!"

Momentary mental flail.

"I just assumed. Um."

Good thing for Esfir that Cal doesn't know that "pants" is the British term for underwear, huh?

Cal grins, then relents.

"Yeah, they are. But it's not really - running material."

Ditto with Esfir.

"I never said they were."

"I'm just sayin'," Cal - uh, says. "You got the shoes, I got the pants. You can take the shoes off, but I'm not running without pants on."

She suddenly grins.

Cal pauses, then laughs as his brain catches up with what came out of his mouth.

"Um. Thank you for that...mind image."

"Any time," Cal says cheerfully, with just a hint of a smirk.

She rolls her eyes.

"I knew you were going to say that."

"Well, if you're gonna give me the opening," Cal says, smirking slightly more.

Haha, he said "opening."

"You take advantage. I know."

That phrasing doesn't sit well.

"Just say the word and I'll keep it to myself," Cal tells her.

"I'm a big girl of twenty-seven. I think I can handle it."

"Just saying." He's going to have to stop that phrase in its tracks before it takes root in his vocabulary. "Not that you really strike me as the type to quietly endure," he adds dryly.

"Too much time being short," she agrees, hiding a smile.

Cal laughs.

"Yeah, I guess you had to learn to stand up for yourself pretty quick."

Esfir grins.

"A little."

"So I won't worry."

Of course she'd tell him if she wasn't really interested. Though Cal doesn't think about that quite as much as he used to.
