Carlisle has been trying to stay more in Forks of late, with Bella still needing care, and Edward needing what little support he'd be willing to accept.

That being the case, his flowers were kept for him by the Bar, still fresh and bright when he arrives to see if he has any messages.

The note attached is read quickly:

...it confounds all notion of time:
effaces all memory of a beginning, all fear of an end.

It puts a smile on Carlisle's face. The flowers will look great in the infirmary, pollen be damned for now.

"You, too?"

There's a quietly bemused tone from the door.

And a submerged set of orchids balanced easily in her hands.

"Edward always shows me up. I completely forgot Valentine's here."

Carlisle doesn't sound too put-upon, smile for his wife.

Esme's expression shifted to some surprise at the mention of the holiday, though it didn't stop her from crossing the room.

"I assumed it was gesture making up the last week." She leaned up and placed a kiss on Carlisle's cheek. All without displacing the delicate fixture. "Not that they couldn't still be."

"I didn't even think about it like that."

Carlisle still feels badly about slapping Edward when they were in Phoenix.

"At least he's not skipping school to be with her?"

Even when neither of them would need it, this wouldn't be a first with Edward.

"He'll calm one she's released." And he wasn't as bad as the worst they'd seen him.

"Maybe."

Carlisle sounds a bit doubtful.

"He's going to blame himself for a long time for this."

That isn't anything new either.

"We're all still here." Beat. "And she's staying. There's something the be said for that, even if he hasn't found a way to focus on it yet."

Carlisle breathes outward, nodding.

"It may say that Bella is incredibly deluded?" Carlisle asks aloud, pulling gently at Esme's wrist to bring her closer to him.

She shifted the underwater flowers to one hand, drawing close. Turning her wrist, so her fingers could slide into her husbands. "Or determined." Though of what would have to wait to be seen.

Delusion requires a certain determination, Carlisle thinks. Persistence.

She'll need both.

"I do think it'll be alright."

"The worst is already past."

Esme leaned up on her toes, pointedly, for a kiss.
The worst for them having less to do with Bella at this point.
Even if she was indelibly looped into the part that would be.

Carlisle responds to the kiss easily, and it's only when he pulls back that there's an errant thought as to whether Stella would agree.

"So - given that I've been a neglectful husband..."

"Yes, given that--"

Esme effected a crestfallen expression, looking down.

It wouldn't be remotely true looking up.
They hardly lived by calendars.

"What would you like to do, cara?"

"It's been a while since we had a evening in town?"

Not Forks. Fork is not big enough to have a down town no less an in town.

"Let's go to Seattle this weekend?"

It's phrased like a question; Carlisle could make reservations as soon as he heads back home.

Esme looked up, smiling, half true and half second from a laugh, as the front had faded even during her own words. "You are a wonderful husband."

"Because I take you places? So materialistic."

Esme squeezes his fingers lightly.

"And here I was being nice, letting you forget Valentines Day."

"Stupid holiday."

"Stupid husband."

Stupid, quite inviting, smile that makes that such a lie.

"Should I call out of work today?"

"I don't have any other plans."

And Bella is resting.

"Let me get back to the hospital and make my excuses."

"That should give me just enough time to change."
