As soon as the shower had started running in the motel's bathroom, Sam had seized his chance. He yelled something indistinct about lunch, grabbed his laptop and messenger bag, and headed straight for Milliways without waiting for Dean to answer.

Now he's sitting at a booth, the laptop open in front of him, staring at something on the screen.

(From time to time he stares at a note, instead.)

Either way, it doesn't look like he's making much progress.

[ooc: open until it scrolls, with a break at 9 MT for tonight's episode of Supernatural.]

"Okay."

He'd pretty much figured, but for a second there--

"Okay," he says again. A beat. "If it helps, I can tell you what I'm doing, and why I'm doing it?"

Elle nods slowly, but she still doesn't look up.

Sam nods, and lets out a quiet breath.

"Back where Ava and I are from," he starts, after a moment or two. "It's been about a week or so since I last saw her there."

"Since she tried to kill me."

A beat.

"As best I can tell, that's been about two years ago, the way time runs in here."

"... okay."

It doesn't sound like she knows where he's going with this.

"Before that, she helped save my life."

Sam shakes his head, and meets her eyes.

"I don't know which Ava's the real one. Or if they both are. But now that it's over, now that Yellow-Eyes is dead and she knows it... I figure I can wait to find out if that changes things."

"I don't wait for someone to try to kill me, Sam."

It's hard and bitter again, and her eyes stay down, but now because she knows it's such a lie.

"... that's not what I meant."

Elle wants to prop up her elbow and rest her head in her hand, but she doesn't.

"I don't care why you're doing it," she says, slowly, more like she's talking to the table.

(When it comes to why, it doesn't seem to matter - Elle just doesn't care enough about any of this to piss off Ava.)

"I don't know how to do it."

"And you want to."

He amends that very hastily, to,

"And you would. If you knew how."

"I don't think she would've told me if I knew how."

It's something like a joke - partly because she's not really sure, and partly because if she is right, even she can get that it's kind of ironic.

"I don't know about that," Sam muses. "I mean, she seemed to want to keep things quiet, when I talked to her, anyway."

Elle shakes her head.

"That she did it."

Sam stares at her for a couple of seconds before shaking his head.

"Sorry, I'm not following."

She glances away, maybe looking a little annoyed at having to explain it further.

"I guess she's different to everyone else. But not me."

Maybe not entirely true, but Elle doesn't know any better.

He takes a breath; lets it out slowly.

"... you have abilities, Elle."

Very quietly.

"I'm betting that's a big part of it."

A little flat, "We're not all like me."

Beat. "Or her."

Her tone's a little lighter when she points out, "And it wouldn't really be a secret if she's like that with everyone with abilities in here."

"Yeah, but --"

Sam bites down fast on what he was about to say, and takes a second to think.

"Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to defend her," he settles on, finally. "But all the people she went after-- were people like her. Like me."

"So I don't know, maybe she thought you..." Sam shrugs.

She thought the same thing you did is the first thought that enters Elle's mind.

The second is, "She didn't have to tell me."

"Would you rather she hadn't?"

"No."

Elle sounds annoyed about this, too.

"But she's mad that I know."

"... she was the one who told you, but she's mad that you know. Right."

He can practically feel the headache forming.

"So it's, like, what, some sort of test?"

Guess how she feels, Sam.

Elle's frustration rushes over what uncertainty she has left, and she finally snaps, "No, it's because she knew I was a freak."

And unlike some people, she can't hide it.

Without even an instant's hesitation--

"You're not a freak, Elle, okay?"

Elle rolls her eyes, though it's a much more difficult move than it looks.

"I don't care what you call it."
