There is a pain in Rei's side and she does not enjoy it.
The fact she has not left the bar since she entered it is a metaphorical thorn into her side, but it has everything in common with the quite real pain to be found there.
Rei never gives indication of it, really. The fact her heart has hurt for her entire life is enough to have built a masking pain tolerance. But its presence grows a little more nagging each day. It lines the sand of her time, of which she is running out.
The girl with pain, the girl with a figurative mask, the girl who is ignoring it all. To aide with this, as she sits by the fireplace, her attention is placed upon the observatory window, as it has been for a significant period of time. She is trying to memorize a constantly changing view. This is counter-productive, but occasionally she indulges.

Knowing that she's Kaworu's family also ratchets up the concern some.
Mia has Cepheus with her tonight, who is winding down and nearly asleep in his mother's arms. She was thinking of sitting by the fireplace since that was a comforting area for a baby to sleep.
"Oh, good evening, Rei," Mia says when she sees her.

"Good evening," she says, her voice likely gentler than it had been on their past occasions. It always seems as if Kaworu being around has such an effect on her. Another mystifying fact.
"How are you and your child, tonight?"

"I am alright," she says. "I am actually glad to have run into you, I have meant to find you."

"You have?"
Beat.
"Is it because something's bothering you?"

Nothing out of the ordinary to find in this case!

"Now I know you and Kaworu are family. You treat your problems as something others don't need to bother with."
She idly rubs the baby's back.
"Do you know how I first met Kaworu? He was sitting in an out of the way booth, obviously injured. And he still took the time to congratulate me on expecting Cepheus before I was even able to offer any aid."

Injured?
Then a pause, as she realizes Mia's first statement. "Ah, I do not try - that is - I - that is actually what I wished to speak with you about," she stutters out. Language could be so faulty at times! If only all humans could understand each other as the angels could - good, bad, Rei had no idea what they were. She merely performed her job laid at hand. But occasionally she had been given a taste of what life was like, for those beings...

Rei can be so precise around the people she knows. How does she flub so much in the face of the bar?

"He is different about people. He lets them in, now. I cannot help but feel it must partially be something you have done."
Somehow, the words are easier, now.
"That is something I need to thank you for."
no subject
"Oh, you don't have to. I mean, I didn't really do anything extraordinary. I was just myself to Kaworu."
This is shortly interrupted by Cepheus being completely asleep and snoring very much like a cat.

It's just that Duck sometimes has a little trouble with balance. And avoiding large, highly visible objects.
