Not one to pass up a good business opportunity, Ben’s behind the counter, aiming to earn some credit toward what’s left of his tab.

The bar is fairly quiet at the moment, so Ben’s leaning on one elbow, doodling on a napkin.

But the guy's American, and probably doesn't know any better.
"I've never been very fond of coffee," he says simply, watching Ben. He's half expecting him to drop the mug any second, now.

"That's all right," he says, sliding over the mug and a bowl of sugar cubes. "I won't hold it against you."
Wiping his hands on a nearby towel, he nods toward the man.
"Ben Wade, 1866."

He's sort of relieved that Ben's from the 19th century. At least this means he's not some crazy stereotype from Texas or something.

"Funny, I run into more white hats here than any other bar I've ever walked into."

He taps two calloused fingertips against the brim of his black hat.
"White hats are the ones on the right side of the law."
(For a malleable definition of right, in Ben's not-so-humble opinion.)
