Nicholas, being English, has to cringe at that just a little bit.

But the guy's American, and probably doesn't know any better.

"I've never been very fond of coffee," he says simply, watching Ben. He's half expecting him to drop the mug any second, now.

Ben, to his gunslinging credit, has steady (and fast) hands.

"That's all right," he says, sliding over the mug and a bowl of sugar cubes. "I won't hold it against you."

Wiping his hands on a nearby towel, he nods toward the man.

"Ben Wade, 1866."

"Police Constable Nicholas Angel." Yes, he always introduces himself like that. "Erm, 2002."

He's sort of relieved that Ben's from the 19th century. At least this means he's not some crazy stereotype from Texas or something.

"Constable," Ben repeats, keeping his outward displeasure to a minimum.

"Funny, I run into more white hats here than any other bar I've ever walked into."

Nicholas is a bit confused. "Sorry, white hats?"

He lives in a popular culture void, and doesn't know a whole lot of slang.

Ben's lips twitch.

"I forget myself here, sometimes."

He taps two calloused fingertips against the brim of his black hat.

"White hats are the ones on the right side of the law."

(For a malleable definition of right, in Ben's not-so-humble opinion.)

Nicholas nods. "Right," he says. "I've never really understood the American legal systems."

Especially cowboy legal systems.
