[ happy hour ]

Not one to pass up a good business opportunity, Ben’s behind the counter, aiming to earn some credit toward what’s left of his tab.

The bar is fairly quiet at the moment, so Ben’s leaning on one elbow, doodling on a napkin.

Ellen sighs. "The Brotherhood of Steel is good people," she says, "and much nicer than the Outcasts, who're just out to recover technology and couldn't care less about the human beings around them. The reason I haven't gone into much detail with the Brotherhood beyond harmless stuff is because it's hard to start thinking that I should ask penetrating questions when they took me in after my father died in front of me, trying to hold off the Enclave bastards who were trying to take his life's work."

Please note that Ellen has used that word for one other group, ever, and it was the aliens who removed several of her organs and installed a second spleen.

"I have other things to worry about than investigating the background of the people who guarded my father before I was born, made sure that he got safely to Vault 101 when he decided to give up on the project for my own safety, and then took me in after my father's death. If you want to investigate them, go right ahead. I've got plenty of faith in them, thank you very much."

"OK, OK, just asking. It goes with my line of work. I ask questions. I probe. I know that that's not a luxury you have. Sorry." One of these days, he is going to ask the wrong person the wrong question.

"I'm sorry. I shouldn't have snapped at you like that." Ellen rubs at her temples a moment. "It's been a bad day or so here. Someone came out to the shooting range to complain yesterday because it was too noisy. I mean, it's the shooting range. That's what it's for."

"Huh? Seriously? What did that fool want you to do? Use a silencer?" Which seems cool in the movies but he bets isn't really that silent in real life anyway. "Some people."

"Wanted me to stop using my shotgun," Ellen says. "And then got all huffy when I said I'd switch to my assault rifle, even though nobody else was out there. After that it just got worse, even after I explained what my world was like."

"Unless you were talking Gandhi or Martin Luther King, I think that is amazingly rude and stupid." Pause. "They believed in pacificism."

"They were in our history texts," Ellen says. "No, this was... some English man, I didn't get his name. He started trying to tell me that if the Capital Wasteland was so bad that I needed those guns to survive then people should just move somewhere else, because obviously that's an easy thing to do and there's somewhere safer and simpler and easier that just anybody could walk off and find. And he'd never even heard of the Great War until I told him about it."

"Gotta ask...did you get this knucklehead's name?" So Knox can avoid him.

"I never got that far," Ellen admits. "He looked sort of like some people I know, but there's a lot of guys who look like that in the Bar. If I see him again I'll point him out to you, though."

[identity profile] gotham-knocking.livejournal.com 2010-08-23 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
Knox nods. He's seen a few faces that seem to match. "Well, in the meantime, I'll be on the lookout for jerks." He takes one more sip of coffee. "I'll catch you later."

"Take care," Ellen says. "And good luck back in Gotham."
