If you'd been thinking that Renee has been avoiding the bar to stay in her room and heal, you'd be absolutely right.

Right now, though, there's an ex-cop out on the training grounds, standing on one had on a railing, her legs bent back over her head. There's just not enough space in her room for her usual style of meditation.

"Mostly by getting stabbed," Renee says unhelpfully. "You read that bit in the Crime Bible about the Spear of Destiny?"

It's not a rhetorical question. She honestly has no idea what she learned after Charlie died; her studying has been that intensive.

"It sounds a little familiar. Though I don't think we got too far on any sort of details." Hard to forget anything involving an artifact as powerful and legendary. Including the fact that it kept the JSA out of World War II.

"That's what I got stabbed with," Renee says dryly.

"But then at least I had it, and could use it against him."

"So you and H took on a divine force and the first murderer. And won." He feels a bit of pride that she could do that. The student has exceeded the teacher.

StudentS.

"Well, we are awesome," Renee points out dryly.

"Only because you had good teachers." He will gladly share credit with Richard.

"Yeah," Renee allows reluctantly, "I guess that's part of it."

"Part of it." He almost smiles.

"Sounds like you did good, Renee."

"Thanks, Charlie," Renee says, more serious now. "There were a lot of losses. I hope we made it worth it."

"Who died this time?" He tries not sound either flippant or resentful. After all, it could have been Renee.

Deep breath.

"Martian Manhunter."

She pauses, because this is hard for her to say out loud - he meant so much to her. "...and I think Batman."

"Oh God." He is as silent as he ever has been. As he ever will be.

Breathe in.
Breathe out.

Renee just doesn't have the words. She's not sure she could make Charlie understand, exactly. He was the Question for much longer than her and worked with them all at one point or other, she's sure.

But he was never a cop in Gotham.

He might think he gets it. After all, he did work with Batman. A few times.

But he doesn't actually say anything, which is probably a good thing.
