"Of couse," she says. "There's been plenty of times where I've been busy in the hospital and when I walk by the cafeteria and wonder why I haven't eaten all day."

"It is very easy to get caught up in things. Even just reading. It has been even more so lately."

"Well, I imagine fighting for your life rates a little higher on the distraction meter than reading does."

"Generally, that does seem to be the effect."

"Then again, you seem to be doing just fine, looking after yourself. You're what, eleven, twelve? By the time I was thirteen, I was pretty much self-sufficient."

"I am thirteen," Rose replies. "As are my friends."

"Thirteen it is, then," she says with a grin. Rose's size is probably close to her own at that stage of her life. perhaps she'll luck into a late growth spurt like she had herself .

Her paradox parents aren't short, so maybe there is not some hope.

Having the off genes always sucks. The narration can attest to this.
