Unexpectedly vegetarian barbecue -- outside

Urquhart reads books about everything that interests him, and he is interested in almost anything. And in MIlliways, you get books from everywhere about anything, even the few things Urquhart finds boring. This is the the candy-land of knowledge that the medieval Scottish murderer always longed for and dreamed of, in his long peregrinations. You don't get what you deserve, you merely get what you get -- and while many people that knew Urquhart briefly before their death would certainly agree he deserved to burn in hell, instead he got this.

There is a small fire burning right now -- in the round medium-sized barbecue which Urquhart has fired up outside, just beyond the kitchen garden. One of the things Urquhart is interested in is food, drink, baking, and cooking; and in one cook-book about the Mediterranean sea, Urquhart read about a kind of cheese you can fry or grill, from Cyprus. Which of course he had to try.

So, Urquhart has several pieces of halloumi, glazed with olive oil and spiked with twigs of rosemary, gently sizzling on the barbecue beside some slices of eggplant; he has a bowl of salad, a baguette or two, and a large bottle of crisp white wine from Greece.

He's sitting out in the sun, content and peaceful, with his dog by his feet  and a glass in his hand. If you happen to walk by, Urquhart will be sure to offer you some food and a glass of wine, too.

And the dog is most likely to wag his tail in friendly welcome.

"Gardening," Urquhart says. "There wasn't a garden here, basically, after the Allpocalypse, so Dinah had lots of things to do for her general dogsbody volunteer."

"You're a gardener now?" The thought makes him laugh a bit.

Urquhart grins. "I am big, strong, and willing," Urquhart says. "I can't eat, drink, read books, walk the dog, and have sex all the time, can I?"

"Can't you? I rather liked the idea that that was what your afterlife was like."

[scots_wolf]

"Well, I like variation," Urquhart says. "Hard work is good for the physique, too. I'm not going to do what these people from your time do and visit some place dedicated solely to lifting weights and pulling levers. That is plain silly."

David considers him thoughtfully for a moment. "No, I can't quite picture you in a gym."

"See?" Urquhart says. "Hence, gardening."

"I'd have thought you'd go in more for something like the forge or working in the stables. Whenever I think of gardening, I think of my mum in a big, floppy hat and floral gloves."

"No, I don't have those," Urquhart says. "And try to get your mum breaking rocks to pave garden paths, or dig up virgin soil for vegetable lots. No, I know what I've done at the end of the day."

David laughs softly into his wine. "No, that was about the time when she'd get me to help."

[scots_wolf]

"Yes, that's what my mother used to do as well," Urquhart says. "Which is why I know how to do gardening."

"I liked it, I suppose," David says with a nod. "When the weather was nice."

[scots_wolf]

"Nothing quite like digging up wet soil in the rain," Urquhart smirks.

[smallgayjew]

David makes a face. "Not my favorite thing, no."

[scots_wolf]

"But it gives you muscles!" Urquhart laughs.

Beat.

"Well, it gives me muscles. Which is probably more enjoyable for you."

[smallgayjew]

David blushes and looks away. "Well...yes."

[scots_wolf]

Urquhart chuckles. "So, you get food and a big strong Urquhart, and win either way."

[smallgayjew]

"Best of both worlds, then," David says, raising his glass to Urquhart.

[scots_wolf]

"Yes," Urquhart says. "Correct. I think the halloumi might be done, too."

[smallgayjew]

"Excellent. We can have a little picnic."

[scots_wolf]

"That was rather the point," Urquhart says, deadpan.

[smallgayjew]

"Yes, right. Of course," David says with a faint blush.

[scots_wolf]

Urquhart gets up to poke the cheese with a spatula.

"Done," he says. "Help yourself to some bread and salad; halloumi coming right up."

"Cheers," David says, moving to get bread and salad.

When he is done with that, Urquhart has the cheese ready for him.
