Mal is sitting at a table in the middle of the bar with a latte mug's worth of overly-sugared coffee. The caffeine hits him very little anymore, but the sugar may be lending itself to an amount of restless energy Mal isn't aware he's experiencing.

All of that aside? He has his calligraphy brushes out and is writing letters to his ever-increasing list of correspondences he's horrible at keeping up with.

Botherable? Sure. Just don't sneak up on him.

Yup.

"...What?"

"...oh you've got to be kiddin' me," he grumbles. He then puts down his drink, so as to fee up his hands for gesture. Raph, being the most New York of his brothers, talks with his hands.

"Rats an' turtles ain't human. We don't got the same emotional range people do. So...there's a period of adjustment that's gotta happen. Some stuff gets turned way up, other stuff way down. Got me so far?"

"So he'll be even more zen than he was before. Big rutting deal."

"Maybe, but not until after he goes through adolescence first."

See now, Mal's adolescence revolved around three things.

War, troublemaking, and girls.

"...That doesn't sound good."

Oh good. You've arrived at the proper conclusion, Mal. Congratulations.

"You think?"

"Is this the point where I have to warn Ma of somethin'?"

"What? NO! I ain't sayin' he's dangerous."

Well, no more so than usual.

"What I am sayin' is that I'll be thinkin' twice before I go an' crash on my brother's couch unannounced."

"Oh that's an image I never needed."

"Welcome to my world."

"I don't know if it helps or anythin'? But the likelihood of Ma just...jumpin' on him is not all that high. If I had to guess."

"Do I want to know why you think this?"

"I don't know! You're the one that came up to me in this scenario."

"To commiserate! Not 'cause I was lookin' to get more information on..." He just stops that train of thought before it fully reaches the station.

"Even without Splinter an' Sallie, with your Ma's relationship with my brother we're kinda family now. Thought it was well past time we talked."

"...Oh. That's. Awful logical of you."

Hunh.

"Think the only other one I've talked to less 'sides you is Don."

"I got my moments," he says picking his stein back up and taking a drink.

"Well, that's because the egghead doesn't come out of his lab unless you purposely trip a breaker, or pull him out kickin' and screamin'."

"Even with all his family at the end o' the 'verse? Dedication."

Raph shrugs.

"Takes all kinds, I guess."

"And what's your kind?"

"Me? I'm the punch first an' ask questions later kind."

Like Jayne, minus the guns.

"'S a good kind to be."

Mal looks down at the papers and sundry he hasn't touched since Raph arrived, and decides to wrap them up in his habitual tight spiral around his brushes.

"You want a drink? I think I'm goin' to grab some lunch."

If only to burn previous images of his mother out of his brain.

"It's done me more good than harm," he says with a smirk. When Mal mentions a drink and food, Raph downs what's left in his stein in a gulp.

"Could do with another. You get this round, I'll get the next."
