Two mountains of books surround a skinny boy in the library today. Two mountains, and a disappointing gap where a third should be.

After having stopped by home for an inventory record, Autor--standing on a stool, no less--ignores his swollen knuckles to grasp the book at the top of the left stack. He dutifully flips to the end, crosses a name off of his list, and moves the book to the stockpile on his right.

Close observation reveals that he's wearing a silver ring.

Botherable, but somewhat annoyed.

Autor will have to keep the author's name in mind, should the book be here. It likely will be.

He smirks. "I don't suppose my asking what it's about will be met with a straight-forward answer, Blume?"

"I'm Blume now, kitten?"

[herr_bookman]

"What, am I not allowed to bestow a nickname on you in return? Nice evasion," he says, and scoops up one of the remaining texts.

Then he points to himself. "Also? Not a kitten."

"Dude, you totally are a grumpy kitten. Accept it. Let the truth of it envelop you, dude," Yugo says soothingly.

[herr_bookman]

"I am not," Autor says, wrinkling his nose at Yugo Blume's tone. "As subjective as that claim is, you can't tell me to accept something without a reason behind it."

He leans down to check the last text--a sprawling yarn with a pitiful character arc--and of course, finds no ending.

"Duuude. Harsh," Yugo says sorrowfully.

Beat.

"No luck finding any endings?"

[herr_bookman]

"No," Autor says, and blows on his knuckles. "I assume there's nothing on your end, either?"

"Not a single one."

[herr_bookman]

Autor nods thoughtfully, though his brow is furrowed. "Well, I figured as much. Thank you for your help."

The amateur librarian pulls a leather-bound journal out of his pocket. Without ceremony, he encodes the mountain of books inside.

"Dude, it's no problem," Yugo says easily.

[herr_bookman]

Autor laughs as he tucks his list of titles into his blazer pocket. "Why are you so helpful?"

Inquiring minds would like to know.

"Dude, I'm totally not sure I understand the question."

[herr_bookman]

The boy purses his lips, thinking. Since arriving at Milliways, he's encountered several people who have offered to help or--he glances at his reddened knuckles--inquire about his health. Strange.

He shakes his head. "I'm not entirely sure I do, either. Let me know if I can repay the favor, Blume."
