"And yet I never seen to see you lately. How odd."

"Well, I've also been otherwise occupied. Maybe a little.

"Splinter 'n all."

"Splinter?" Clearly he has never heard the name. He doesn't even know it IS a name.

It's funny. He cares deeply about Sallie. But somehow the idea that there is someone else in her life doesn't hurt that much. Absence does not always make the heart grow fonder. Or jealous.

"Like in you're dating him?"

"I don't know what qualifies as 'dating', but I suppose so, yes."

"When I come from, it involves going to movies, talking in the park, and arguing about who pays for dinner." Among other, cruder things that Charlie would never say to Sallie.

"I'm glad for you." He really is. Even if he will always wonder about what could have been.

And maybe talking themselves past anything awkward.

"Thanks. For being happy."

"You're welcome." Time to let whatever could have been be water under the bridge. And to be friends.

"When do I get to meet him?"

"We can get you over for dinner if you'd like. Ain't no shortage around me, you remember."

"I would like that. Though if it's during chemo, my appetite might be diminished." Oh, for a working connection to the STAR Labs medical website, so he can research things!

Sallie nods in comprehension. (She remembers those kinds of things; Sallie's had experience.)

"Will do, Charlie.

"Now - I do got some more customers coming up. Not that I ain't enjoying our conversation, but can I catch up with you a bit later?"

"Any time, Sallie." And his smile is warm and soft.

Later, he'll ponder what it means that his not-thing with Sallie is done. For now, he will just be glad about things. Which in itself makes him glad. (He will have to thank X for her unexpected words of wisdom.)
