As Charles was feeling in the mood to read something different, he asked Bar for a recommendation and she gave him a book that grabbed his attention.

She gave him a fantasy book that deals with some familiar themes and has given him some ideas for approaching the world. As Bar likes to protect her patrons, its in a blank cover that doesn't show what it is. Since the weather is nice, he's reading outside by the garden with an iced tea as he reads.

(OOC: Charles is listening passively as he's concentrating more on reading. Please let me know your character's thoughts in the narration or why Charles wouldn't be able to hear them. Thank you. I am done with the school year! This is open until it scrolls. All threads are set before the one with Sallie.)

"I've been listening to him for years. The BBC only plays the occasional clip of his speeches. I really wish I could have heard him talking about the invasion.

"Not that Winston isn't interesting. But he's very..." Only one word comes to mind. "British."

Charles grins as he's had many people in his life speak of him that way, "I can see that."

"I've met both FDR and Churchill. The perks of being so high up the chain. Both interesting men in person." Name dropping? Maybe a little.

"Oh, do you prefer working with one more than the other?"

"Churchill has a fondness - almost a love - for Americans. But he also seems to lose patience with anyone or anything that wastes his time. I guess it's a good thing I don't work with him often.

"FDR radiates calm, although he's rather patrician. He also has a fair amount of reserve that is hard to figure out."

"Losing patience tends to come back to you, I've found that with students. Being quiet is a way to get people's attention."

"It seems to work for both of them. And has for a long while." And there is a glimmer of worry about both men, one clearly getting old and the other rumored to be ill.

"It does, they've changed the shape of the world,"

Charles sips his tea as he doesn't want to let anything slip out about what happens.

"FDR more than Winston, I think. The US is now a superpower. When the war is over, we will overshadow the UK for years to come. Winston probably knows this, probably knows he can't stop it, but acts like it's still 1815." Strange that Howard says this with a lot of respect for the PM.

"True, I've seen the effects of that in my lifetime."

"I am glad I am not in the diplomatic corps. I can't imagine being in the Court of St. James if you're from the US will be easy." And that fool Joseph Kennedy was a terrible choice as ambassador as it is.

"Being an American at Oxford ended up working out fairly well. Not perfect but Raven has always been more American in how she acts than I am,"

She also knows how to play it so people like her.

"You didn't fool people with your accent?" Howard sees Charles as British far more than American.

"Oh I did, but I wasn't raised there so I still miss things,"

Not that many due to his telepathy but he found it useful at times to be a little American.

"That makes me feel a bit better about being a bit lost on occasion.

"Though I can go days or weeks with minimal contact with anyone but Americans." Peggy Carter notwithstanding.

"That seems like it would be stranger."

"The whole experience has been strange, Charles. You know how we're treated, right? One hand extended in friendship, the other in frustration." Overpaid, oversexed and over here.

"Yes, I do and I can believe that, but you're doing a lot of good."

"I don't doubt that. But I think everyone involved will be glad when we can go home." A day Howard can almost see coming now.

"Oh yes, war changes how life is lived on every level."

Yes, he thinks, it's made me richer.

"As long as we can live through it."

"I think you can,"

Charles doesn't know Howard's story but he seems like someone that will live through the war.

"That is my plan." He thinks he has a great future ahead of him, from what a few have told him.

"And what have you been up to?"

"Much of the same work as before, just endlessly refining it."

"Doesn't that get a bit dull?" The interesting think about working for the SSR? It's shown Howard there is more to life than making things fly. A lot of new vistas have been opened up.
