Winter Wonderland - 12th Night Party!

Father Christmas returns from the mountains this 12th night, leading the chained Krampus and his former captives. Some of them are triumphant, some hurt and limping, some are huddled with their friends who have been searching for them.

Those entering the bar today will find one corner of it decked out in a minimalist theme of white, silver, and blue snowflakes. Warm, enchanted snow drifts down from the ceiling, disappearing before it alights on the floor, but piling up on the window sills and mantle of the fire.

Snowmen dance outside on a glassy floor, circling and swaying in lines. Should one want a fancier change of clothes after an ordeal in the labyrinth, it'll magically be provided at the door.

"Their first morning shift on their own, as the early morning ravenous hordes descend, they will be thanking you under their breath, not knowing who they're thanking," the bakery task-master smiles back, looking - at the moment - nothing like a baker.

"Because otherwise, they would be expected to make all these things by rote rather than consult measurements, which are of course extremely important in baking," Dr. Lecter says, nodding agreement.

"Measurements are important, but so is... I don't know how to word it. Knowledge? Intuition? Recipes are like sheet music or blue-prints: bare bones. Clean and neat in black and white, and you can follow it to the letter and still end up with a brick instead of a cinnamon roll, if you don't know what you're doing."

"I have a list of applicants I've narrowed it down to." Because Charlie has been getting impatient with her dragging her feet. "They'll each get a trial-run for a couple of days, in January."

"How many are you going to go through?" Dr. Lecter asks.

"Six," she replies. "They'll be given two trial shifts each. I'll have a different apprentice each day for a week."

"That sounds like serious work, on top of your usual work," Hannibal says.

"It is," she agrees. "But it's just a week, and assuming I find someone who'll fit, it'll make the usual work a lot lighter in the future."

"How did you find the appplicants?" Hannibal asks.

"We advertised, both in the papers and on the globenet. Charlie brought the applications for those whose applications seemed the best, and he and I picked over them, and then Mom did all the reference checking and culled the list some more. Then we ranked those who were left, and contacted the most likely-seeming six."

"I hope so too," Rae remarks, running a finger along the side of her teacup. "Paulie's a hard act to follow."

"I would certainly like one," she replies, smiling. "Even just two mornings a week I don't have to get up at four would be nice."

"The things we have to put up with foor the sake of our art," Hannibal sighs, theatrically.

Sunshine chuckles at his theatricality.

"Alas, the dough won't knead itself. Not unless Charlie got one of those kneading machines like PrimeTime has - but I'd not stand for that. Those're pretty much beneath contempt."

"So easy to overdo things with a machine," Dr. Lecter agrees.

"It is," she agrees. "Kneading by hand means you're paying better attention to the dough. It's far to easy to start doing something else when a machine is taking care of the hands-on part for you."

PrimeTime's baking can't hold a candle to hers, Rae knows it.

"And the machine can't notice and ccorrect minute deviations," Dr. Lecter says.

"I'd likely be suspicious of any bakery machine able to notice such details," she nods, smiling slightly as she sips her tea. "We ran into a self-aware, automated dry-cleaners, in the labyrinth. Wanted to take over the world."

"Though, how it would do that, I have no idea."

"That sounds like a very bizarre nightmare," Dr. Lecter says. "Dry cleaners. Really."

"Extremely bizarre," Rae agrees. "We rode across the moving racks of clothes to get to its main computer hub, and Jemma very handily took it apart."

"The labyrinth has a very strange sense of humour," he says.
