Some time after this sign goes up, Guppy settles down at the bar, with the List, trying to work out who is still here.

They haven't checked it for a while, he notes, looking at some of the names.

"It was", he says quietly. "The poor just kept getting ground down, the rich didn't care. It was a powder keg."

"I wish I could say things were better in my time, but the poor still definitely get it in the neck."

"They're better. Trust me, they're better."

Those memories are still a dark place for him, when he looks back on them.

"That's some comfort at least." Guppy nods.

He looks back at his list. "I'll put you down as a first aid trained helper then?"

"Yeah, do", Gavroche agrees. "You've taught me a lot, and there's my wizardry too."

"I know you can talk to babies and plants and things." Guppy says. "And you can heal if you take damage yourself - is that correct?"

"Yeah, I can heal myself if I have to - but only if it's something I really have to do, and it's harder than healing other people."

"No I mean... if you heal someone do you take damage?"

"Oh - yeah, there's a cost, but it's nothing I can't recover from. I'll lose some energy, or pay in blood if it's something really big - and that's not as dramatic as it sounds, I only have to cut my hand."

"Okay. Make sure you tell us if something is too big to heal?"

"Promise", he says with a nod. "And I'll only ever do enough to stop them from dying, if it's that bad."

"I've shown you the stasis machine, haven't I?"

"You have. When we were talking about Eponine."

Guppy nods.

"Glad we didn't need it in the end."

"Yeah, me too. It was a close thing, I think."
