What's that jingling sound?

It's certainly not coming from the small blonde detective with the bright green shoes, onto which she's carefully gluing bright pom poms. Catch her at her table or taking a midnight jog in her very shiny, very neon-y, shoes.

"Yep," says Juliet. "And he's Shawn's dad - he hangs out here sometimes."

"If he's anything like the boys, he sounds like fun."

Juliet pulls a face. "He's more like Shawn than he'd like to think. But he's much more serious.."

[iamhismummy]

"Serious, but a playful side under it?"

[craftylildoodlepumpkin]

"Deep, deep down inside." Henry's is much more submerged than Shawn's, in any event.

[iamhismummy]

"Then you know what your job is, with him", she says mischievously.

[craftylildoodlepumpkin]

"Well," Juliet says, "I'd like to think it's Shawn's." Henry tends to be non-responsive to her cheering, sometimes.

[iamhismummy]

"But is Shawn good at it?"

[craftylildoodlepumpkin]

"Shawn," Juliet declares, "is really good at making Henry mad."

[iamhismummy]

"Ah." She makes a face. "Families are good at that, as a rule."

[craftylildoodlepumpkin]

"They're the best that way," says Juliet. "But you have to learn to love them either way."

"Or you don't."

Hers threw her out when she told them she was pregnant.

[craftylildoodlepumpkin]

Juliet doesn't know that yet - and when she does learn about it she'll be outraged. And so she asks, "your didn't?"

[iamhismummy]

"No", she says flatly. "1939, and I wasn't married. And... well, you know about my Jamie."

[craftylildoodlepumpkin]

That's enough to get her lip curling. "They sound like jerks - pardon my french, they're still your folks," says Juliet. "But who just stops speaking to their daughter?"

[iamhismummy]

"Say what you like, I've probably thought worse." She smiles faintly. "But we're doing fine without them."

Juliet considers that quietly. "Do you ever miss them?"

She compares it to her experience with Frank. Who she so doesn't miss, of course. She doesn't even call him dad!

"Sometimes I have", she admits. "When it got cold and lonely or things were at the worst... having the baby so nobody would take him away, that was bad. But I knew they didn't want me back, not unless I gave him up."

Juliet considers this. "You have the Bar to stay at now, if you need to get warm," she declares with consideration. "I understand - my dad wasn't really in the picture. He'd promise he'd show up but..." Juliet frowns. "You know how it goes."

[iamhismummy]

"I do", Nancy says with a smile, "and I never need to worry about where food's coming from any more. Did your dad ever keep his promises?"

She shakes her head. "But I had my mom." That's better than twelve days.

[iamhismummy]

She nods. "Better one parent that cares than having the other one around knowing he doesn't."

Juliet cringes. But she knows Nancy's right. "I think so," she says.

"Sorry", she says quietly. "It's not right that he doesn't."

[craftylildoodlepumpkin]

"It's okay," says Juliet. "I'm over it."
