The door opens again to Quentin who quickly disguise himself in a magical scent of heather and steel as he curses, "Maeve's tits, your timing is awful."

There are scratches on his cheek and hands, he and Raj were sparring in Goldengreen when Toby and the Duke entered. He had been meaning to get ready to head back to Shadowed Hills, not here. That's why he's grumbling as he heads towards the counter, as long as he's here, he can wash his face.

"I can see that. There's always something new going wrong. My aunt's a private investigator, there's always something she needs to help with. I'm from San Francisco."

"Does she deal mostly with the ordinary kind of problems, or... other things?"

"It depends on what's needed,"

He's not going to let on what he is with this man yet, he doesn't think it will be safe.

"Of course", Michael says, inclining his head and not pressing. "And the other kind of problems can be very complicated."

"They've all been complicated from what I've seen and horrible."

"Most of the creatures out there that kill humans, do it to eat them."

There are exceptions, which are actually harder to deal with.

Quentin stares at him for a long moment,

"I don't think I said anything about creatures. My aunt's investigated a murder, a serial killer, a kidnapper and a poisoner. Oh and that last one she was doing while dealing with a politician who was trying to stop her."

"No, you didn't", he observes. "Not since you came in swearing by Maeve's name. Shouldn't the police be dealing with that kind of thing?"

"They do all they can and she helps where they can't."

"Good work, then - and dangerous."

"Yes, but it needs to get done. Justice is important."

"She doesn't try to arrest them alone, though?" he asks with mild concern.

"Not if she can help it,"

Though Toby's not good about back up but she's getting better about being helped.

He chuckles. "Now that sounds like a few people I know, if push comes to shove."

"Yes, but she just keeps going,"

Quentin wants to be there for her when she does it as she puts herself in a lot of danger and changes things for the better.

"You sound very close to her. That's good, family - of all kinds - is the most important thing we have."

"She's someone who changes the world around her, I want to be near her so I can learn from her,"

That's why he's going to be her squire and someday she'll meet his parents.

Michael nods.

"That kind of person is few and far between - and precious beyond gold, when they do come along."

"Yes, she is, that's why she's always being pulled in when something goes wrong."

He makes a sympathetic face at that.

"Because she's one of the few - or the only person in your town? - who can put it right."

"She's the one willing to poke her nose in and she's trusted by one person in charge. San Francisco's huge, she doesn't deal with all of it, only a small part of it."

"Of course... although your small part must have very bad luck, to have had such a succession of bad cases in it."

"They're not all in the same place and powerful people tend to attract others who want to take it from them."

"...yes, they do", Michael says regretfully. "Some more unscrupulous than others."

"Oh yes, that's why its important to have good leaders who put their people first."
