It is early in the morning in at least one time zone.

A giant flatpack hut has been set out ready for the Scouts and helpers to help assemble*, barn raising style.

Able to lift stuff? Able to hold stuff while it is attacked with a nailgun? Able to hold a paintbrush? Able to make cold drinks and bring them to the sweaty builders? There is a role for you!

Once the building is up, they can start on the rest of the playground, but one thing at a time.

There's also a gramophone in one corner of the site, playing some suitably inspirational barn-raising music.

Dick is used to constructing playing equipment.

"Hey,'Manzo! You need help?"

He's getting it anyway, so.

"Sure, thanks." Almanzo grins. "I'm sorry I couldn't make the camp, I was too tired from harvesting."

Dick shakes his head, unable to wave a hand because he's adjusting a support pole.

"Don't worry about it. you and me can go fishing together instead."

"I'd like that. Fishing's a special treat for when it's raining."

"Fishing when raining?"

He gives it a moment's thought and he shrugs.

"Okay. Fishing when raining."

"Because the rest of the time I'm working." Almanzo explains. "And because the fish be easier to catch when they can't see you."

He grins, and frees one hand from holding a support pole to offer it to Almanzo, to shake on it.

"When it's raining and we're both in?"

Almanzo grins and shakes the hand.

"Sure thing."

He looks at the poles. "I think we're making an A frame with these."

"Yeah," Dick nods. "Here, pass me that rope - you done anything like this before?"

"Well last year I helped father build a sled for my oxen to haul wood." Almanzo says. "They're only little oxen, though."

"I did something like that for an elephant once - only a little elephant, though."

That's a joke.

Dick grabs the rope, and having eyeballed the right positioning, lowers his pole to the ground, so they can tie the first end of A-frame together.

Dick blinks. Then he shrugs off his surprise.

"Big grey animal from Africa. Bigger than any ox."

"Ah." Almanzo nods. "Maybe there'd be a picture of one in the big book at school."

"Maybe," Dick says brightly. After a second's thought... "Do you remember Elinore from the circus? Big nose, big ears?"

"Oh!" Almanzo feels silly now, but there were so many exciting things that night.
