It is early in the morning in at least one time zone.

A giant flatpack hut has been set out ready for the Scouts and helpers to help assemble*, barn raising style.

Able to lift stuff? Able to hold stuff while it is attacked with a nailgun? Able to hold a paintbrush? Able to make cold drinks and bring them to the sweaty builders? There is a role for you!

Once the building is up, they can start on the rest of the playground, but one thing at a time.

There's also a gramophone in one corner of the site, playing some suitably inspirational barn-raising music.

"Hey." Jay calls in return, showing Dick the schematics for the a rather elaborate rope playground. "Feel up for some climbing to get the starter ropes on?" He points to the three centre poles already concreted in place.

Dick pauses, tilts his head, and offers a raised eyebrow. You're supposed to know me. Why ask that question?

Then he grins brightly and grabs the rope, scuttling up the first pole in record time.

Jay rolls his eyes and lets him go, spooling the rope out as Dick climbs. The clip to hold the rope in place is pretty self-explanatory and Dick must have seen similar rigs in his circus days.

Seen, used, help set up. Truth be told, Dick's more at home here than he is on the rooftops of Gotham these days. He holds on with his thighs and ankles and clips the ropes into place, tugging to make sure it's secure and pulling it back through to feed down to Jay to be secured to a peg on the ground.

"How many per pole?"

"Eight." He calls, tossing up the next rope. He trust Dick to keep his balance up there.

It's not misplaced trust. Dick leans backwards, keeping his grip on the pole, to catch the rope and continue to attach them to the pole.

"So I talked to X," he says conversationally.

He tosses the ropes up one by one. His aim perfect. "How did that go?" Jay asks conversationally.

Dick grins, although mostly to himself because he really is concentrating on his work. He knows more than anyone about rope safety.

"She said you were who you said you were. So I guess I hafta 'pologise for beingkinda rude."

"Nah, nothing to be sorry for. You were being careful, that's all. Paranoia kinda goes with the gig." Jay shrugs it off. "Did she tell you she kicked my ass last time we sparred? She is scary good."

"She doesn't scare me."

One thing X has never been to Dick - scary in any way. "But she didn't need to tell me that, she's been kicking my ass since forever."

Since - the week his parents died and he ran in, scared and angry and desperate to fight something. Seems like forever ago and it seems like yesterday.

"Lucky you." He has enough respect for X's skills to know he can't afford to get on her bad side. "But she's a good friend to have. Even if she is dating a weird version of B."

"Haven't met him."

He's not sure he wants to. After what his other self did, he doesn't want to be instantly disliked. But... Dick shrugs.

"Guess alternate universe versions of people are always weird."

"It can get hard to deal with. I guess it helps that X's B looks nothing like ours. His Alfred doesn't either." Cause fuck did that one hurt.

Dick concentrates on the last few ropes, before swinging himself around the poll to build up momentum and jumping to the next pole.

"He's short."

Jay snorts. "Yeah, that's about the nicest thing I could think of to say about him."

He gives a little nod at Dick's jump, acknowledging the skill in it. "So what else did X tell you?"

Dick glances down at him, partly to see where the next rope's coming from, partly to see what he means.

"About what?"

Dick and X talk about everything.

"Me, mostly. I'm curious what else she had to say." Mostly because X doesn't waste works.

"Oh."

Dick takes no more than a second to think about this, and that's mostly for dramatic effect.

(He's a performer, forgive him.)

"That you were a sad, angry jerk."

He grins down at Jay. "She likes you."

Jay shrugs. Why argue? "She's got me pinned there."

"It's alright," Dick says, with a shrug. "I'm a sad, angry jerk, too."

Bruce is a sad, angry jerk. It's like a requirement.

"Hey, we wouldn't be able to do what we do if we weren't just a bit messed up."

Or maybe they wouldn't want to. Definitely, if Dick had the choice, he'd be back in the circus, and not doing that thing he does.

But he doesn't have a choice, so this'll do.

"We ended up as Bats for a reason, Dickiebird." Jay sighs philosophy. "Just don't let the cave get you down, hey?"

Bird, not a bat. Dick doesn't much want to be Batman at this point in time. He's happy being his partner, despite the fact that Jason seems to represent the idea that he won't be forever.

"I like the cave," he says. "It's quirky."
