In the main bar there is a tray of cupcakes. Some are brightly coloured, some decorated with flowers, some look more like puppies or bunnies, or owls.

Around the table of cupcakes are some comfy chairs, and on the wall behind is a sign:

"Tired, we moved all Turtle's stuff in today." Bonnie says, sitting down on the next chair. "Otherwise good. You?"

"Ah, so he has moved in with you?" Alana says, plucking up a cookie. "That's good. I hope everyone will adjust to the change soon, especially the kids. I'm doing well, thank you for asking."

"Yeah, we married last weekend. I think Terry's gettin' used to the idea." Bonnie says. "I think it's going to be Ted that finds it hardest."

"Oh, really! Congratulations," Alana says, beaming at her. "That's wonderful. Why is Ted the one you're worried about?"

"I don't think Ted ever really got over the death of his birth father." Bonnie says.

Alana sobers up. "I see," she says, glancing down to the cookie in her hand. "I hope Ted can adjust to Turtle. Losing a parent is very difficult, especially while you're young."

"Ted was closer to their dad than Stuart." Bonnie says. "They used to go out each week and buy comics to collect. Stuart was closer to their mom until she ran off and left them."

"So they've both felt terrible losses," Alana says, furrowing her brow. "I'm sorry to hear that, and I'm glad you've placed them in your home. Maybe under your guidance, they can heal a little."

"They've been doin' pretty well." Bonnie says. "There's been a couple rows, which is okay, because I want them to feel comfortable enough livin' here to have a yell if they need to."

"That's a good plan," Alana says, nodding thoughtfully. "It's excellent that you're encouraging them to express themselves. I hope that Ted can learn to grieve for his father in a healthy way."

"You ever do teenage psych?" Bonnie asks. "Lot of grunting and monosyllables."

Alana chuckles. "I do work with families, but I've been limited to younger children," she admits. "There was one teen I tried to help, but we didn't get along very well. I feel you on the monosyllables bit."

"You got to be realistic with teens." Bonnie says. "And not make a big deal of things. Stuart wants to be adopted so their social worker is trying to get their mom to sign the paperwork, so it's possible she may pitch up at some point. I think that'd cause a lot of emotions to come out."

"Oh, yes, most definitely," Alana says, her eyes widening. "Her return would be especially hard on Stuart. It might break him for a little while."

"Well, of the two, Stuart is more resilient." Bonnie says. "But he's become that way by cutting his Mom out of his feelings. I think the reason he wants to be adopted is so there's no chance she can ever get him back."

"Then I hope the adoption progresses as smoothly as it can, and that Stuart and Ted don't have to face their mother," Alana says, nibbling on her cookie. "Do the boys know of the potential for her to show up?"

"They know she's been contacted and it's possible, but neither of them believes she will."

"At least they're prepared," Alana says, inclining her head. "Here's hoping the boys are right and she doesn't show. If they don't want to see her, can you prevent that from happening?"

"Maybe. But then she probably won't sign the papers to let me adopt Stuart without us havin' to go to court."

Alana frowns slightly. "That's too bad. I hope that you win the case. She shouldn't have any claim ln him, since she left then."

"He really oughta class as legally abandoned." Bonnie says.

"He should, and that will help with the case," Alana says, tilting her head. "I hope a court case won't be too strenuous for your boys. Will they have to appear in court as well?"

"I don't think so, but Stuart might want to, it's the sort of thing he might be interested in."

"Because he wants to see how the courts work?" Alana says, cupping her elbow in one hand and resting her chin on the heel of the other. "Is he interested in being a lawyer?"

"A little, he did want to be a businessman but he's joined the debate team and he's doing real well. And it would be nice fer him to be in the court not as a defendant."
