AU week raven telepath Ragnar

[bigarmy_strangepants]

 A tall man in a rough homespun blue shirt enters the bar, followed by a pair of ravens.

He seems to have been here before, as he claims a rolled-up map from the bar, orders a tankard of ale, and settles at a table with one of the ravens, studying the map.

The other raven sits in the rafters, watching.

He bobs a bow to her, as best he can in human shape. "Will you share a meal with me? There are many wonderful things to be had here."

Oh yes, she is definitely interested, and says so, but politely.

This isn't her flock's territory.

He scoops up the human shaped garments he keeps up here and pulls them on, dropping down from the rafter and bouncing off the couch with practiced ease.

He walks to the bar, adjusting his coat and orders a plate of sandwiches and raw meats for one with the white feather.

She lands on a table nearby, and preens while he does so.

He offers her the plate of meat, pouring water into a saucer. "It is a pleasure to share a meal with one of my own kind again."

She is suitably grateful and polite, and takes a piece of meat to swallow it.

It is very good.

[intoaman]

And very fresh. Something ravens often don't get. "There's plenty if your friends are hungry too?" He has the feeling there are more ravens here, even if he can't see them.

There is one, the one with the crooked toe, to whom she calls now.

He appears, and politely greets Diaval.

[intoaman]

Diaval greets him politely in return, giving his human name as an introduction and inviting him to eat with them.

The one with the crooked toe runs his beak through the neck feathers of the one with the white feather in her wing, showing that they are family from one flock, and thanks Diaval.

[intoaman]

Diaval watches the gesture with a very human pang of regret and sorrow, missing his own flock deeply. But he tries to hide it, as humans do, and helps himself to a sandwich.

The ravens eat, taking turns to pick pieces of meat off that plate.

[intoaman]

"If the winter is lean, I can order some you can carry back to the flock." He offers, although they both seem in good health and well fed. After all, it was care for his flock that drove him into that field, and towards those dogs. No-one should be that desperate if there's a way around it.

Oh no -- it's not winter, and their human friend takes good care of them, and they can come along to battlefields and feast on those their human friend and his flock have killed.

It is a good life of plenty for a raven.

[intoaman]

"Human friends?" The idea of eating from a battlefield doesn't bother him in the slightest but the phrase catches his attention.

[bigarmy_strangepants]

The ravens explain to him that their human friend can speak to their minds, and knows where battles are going to be because he wages them.

And even in very bad winters, he can spare them an old sheep that no longer bears lambs.

"I should very much like to meet this human." Diaval asks excitedly. "If you would permit it?"

[bigarmy_strangepants]

The ravens offer to call their human, and on the other side of the room, a tall blond man gets to his feet and turns towards them.

[intoaman]

Diaval cocks his head in exactly the way the ravens do to study the blonde man.

"Hello." He frowns, watching him with curiosity and concern.

[bigarmy_strangepants]

"I see you made friends with my friends," the man says, smiling as he comes over.

[intoaman]

"I didn't know men could be such good friends to ravens." He rises to meet the man. "But they speak very highly of you."

[bigarmy_strangepants]

"We can understand each other," the man says. "We can speak and see through our minds."

[intoaman]

"You treat them with kindness and respect." He nods. "It's not something I have come to expect from men."

[bigarmy_strangepants]

"Why would any one treat Odin's birds badly?" Ragnar wonders.

[intoaman]

"Odin?" He tilts his head in a very birdish gesture.
