milliways_bar | Twelfth Night Party, Pontmercy style!

You -- yes, you, whoever you are -- got an invitation to the party. All of Milliways is welcome!

If you choose to come, you'll find Bar directing you to a big round tent that went up this afternoon on the lawn outside the bar. Marius and Cosette and various friends spent a lot of time this morning ferrying decorations in, and the waitrats spent a lot of time in the afternoon ferrying food in, but the doors won't officially open until close to sunset.

But this isn't a cheap white plastic tent, oh no. It's warm and domed and made of thick fabric, something like a very large yurt. A bit of magic keeps out the drafts, making everything extra cozy.

There's a fire in the middle of the floor, with a low screen encircling it but also magic meaning that this fire puts of warmth but will not actually burn anything, even if you step right into it. The floor is wood -- great for dancing, if you feel like it! There's a piano over against the wall for anyone who wants to make some music.

Everywhere there are garlands of European evergreen branches and herbs, studded with bright dried fruit and sparkling ornaments. (Mistletoe might very well be among them, though the Pontmercies haven't thought to supply that as an intentional party game.) There are candles and lanterns everywhere, and a big chandelier. There are no electric lights at all -- it's all fire -- but a good number of them are magical, so that nothing's going to get set on fire or covered with smoke. The general intended impression is of genteel, welcoming festivity, in a very French and very early 19th century European way.

There are food and drinks galore. Come in and enjoy the party!

Edit: As of Joly's arrival, Cosette now has a mini-polaroid camera. Fear, Milliways. Feel free to assume that she's popped up to take a candid picture of your character(s) at any point, as long as they're not doing or wearing anything scandalous! She will happily give the resulting picture to your character if they want; it probably won't be a very good picture, in terms of composition or focus, but it will be cheerfully enthusiastic.]

"I could get drunk on this and stare in fascination at my hands all night," he says, amused, and indeed utterly fascinated.

"And you are an entirely different color from me! Does this potion work according to whoever drinks it?"

Combeferre has spent hours cataloging the effects of the drink already, so he knows the feeling.

"Yes," he says, with enthusiasm, "it does! It depends on the person's physiology--heart rate, blood pressure, and so on--as well as their emotional state, temperament, and such." He grins. "My friend Bahorel glows scarlet, to the surprise of no one who knows him."

"That is interesting magic indeed," he says, still marveling at the effect.

"Oh, Bahorel? I've spoken to him once before, and I see that he's already had some to drink tonight! He does seem to be a man full of passion. I wonder what my colors say about me..."

He then adds, in a slightly more confidential tone, "I must admit, though--I may still have the remnants of some healing magic in my body. It may have enhanced the results somewhat."

"I haven't come to a conclusion about what the different colors may mean about the drinker," says Combeferre.

Then, lowering his voice to match Emcee's: "Oh? What sort of magic, do you know?"

Emcee frowns a bit in thought, though he is also a little hesitant to say too much.

"What sort-? I'm not exactly certain," he says truthfully. "I have no knowledge of magic other than what I have seen people do here at Milliways. This magic-- well, it was rather a combination of powers, from two very different and rather opposite individuals. One who uses sunlight to fuel her abilities, the other--a vampire."

Combeferre nods, thoughtful, and then recollects that Emcee said it was healing magic. "I hope you're fully recovered, and that whatever your injury or illness was, it wasn't serious," he says.

Emcee utters an abrupt, dry chuckle at that, which makes his glitter flash darkly for a moment.

"They saved my life, actually," he says. "But thank you. I do feel much better now."

That sounds grim. "Then I'm glad you were able to find such magic. It's one of the great marvels of Milliways. I also come from a world without magic, and only saw it here."

"Oh," he says with mild surprise, "you seem to know quite a lot about this particular magic drink, so I assume then that you learned how to make it here?"

"Oh, yes. I was very lucky. I made a friend here, a scholar from a world with magic. I've learned a great deal from him and his world."

And ended up deaging the Bar with it, whoops.

For all Emcee recalls, his time spent as a little boy was the Bar's own wacky doing.

"So, you must have some natural, innate affinity for this kind of magic, even if it doesn't exist in your world. That is quite marvelous and a wonderful gift."

"I don't know if it's my affinity or the ambient magic of Milliways," says Combeferre. "This place must be absolutely soaking in magic, else how could it exist? Besides, I had an excellent teacher. Mr. Segundus--the scholar I spoke of--he is most patient and knowledgeable. I'm very grateful to have met him."
