OOM: A complicated mission.

All Cassian wants is to stand under a 'fresher and not listen to orders from anyone for a few hours, maybe even do something other than monitoring. All the parts of his disguised uniform are on his bed, he's only in his shirt and grey pants when he enters Milliways.

As the noise changes, he sighs, this will do for now. He sits down near the fire and orders caf with a shot of rum in it and some waffles, Imperial food somehow is flavorless and filling. He clasps his hands until his drink arrives to hide the small trembles which come and go. Once he's settled, his gaze goes over the main Bar.

"Artoo comes here, I don't know if he comes on his own but I wouldn't be surprised. Astromechs tend to want to do everything their own way."

"Artoo?" Alana says, pretending she doesn't recognize the name. "Droids seem like they have a lot of personality. Are all of them sarcastic?"

"No, only some of them, but they always provide opinions on what they know."

Alana smiles. "And they know a lot, right? They're programmed to learn?"

"It depends on the droid and who programmed them, but the good ones pay attention."

"Like Kay," Alana says, inclining her head. "Is it difficult to program a droid? Can anyone do it?"

"Its not easy, I wouldn't know how to build one up from the bottom but I can make adjustments."

"And I assume they have failsafes to keep them from harming humans?" Alana says, furrowing her brows. "And that those are difficult to adjust?"

He stares at her for a moment, the Empire has classes of droids for hurting, spies, interrogation even an astromech can zap you. During the Clone Wars, there were armies of droids. His hands tremble on his mug and he grips tighter to stop it, they didn't use an interrogation droid on him but he's seen them and has spent his life watching out for spy droids,

"No, why would they have that?"

"They don't?" Alana says, blinking at him. "That's awful. There's an author in my world who has written an extensive amount of science fiction on the subject. He coined the First Law of Robotics: That robots cannot harm their human masters. I had hoped that such a law would have been on effect in your galaxy, but apparently not."

"No, I'm glad they don't. Kay's saved my life more times than I can count. How would you enforce a rule like that and why? There are always wars and droids are part of the galaxy."

"You're glad?" Alana says, glancing at his hands. She quickly returns her gaze to his face. "The Law was in their basic programming, which they couldn't go against. And it was because the people feared a robot uprising."

"Yes, I am. It would be nice if some droids weren't as good at hurting but that's the Empire. Droids get reprogrammed when they don't work as expected, but an uprising from just them? No, those who rise, rise together; droid, non-humanoid, human,"

They are fighting and rising against the Empire and droids are part of it.

"Non-humanoid?" Alana says, raising her brows. "So the Empire specifically programs droids to hurt people? After the little you've mentioned about them, I'm not surprised. Another thing I wouldn't be surprised about is humans, droids, and non-humanoids working together, like you've said."

"Yes, Wookies and Twi'leks are slaves, the Empire doesn't think them important or the Outer Rim, more resources for them to use. There are interrogation and spy droids and during the Clone Wars, there were droid armies."

"Did the droid armies have... organic, I guess would be the word--commanders?" Alana says, tilting her head. "Or was the army run entirely by droids? Who ultimately controlled them?"

"A mix, General Grievous was I think a mixture of droid and I don't know what species, Count Dooku was human but there were strategy droids,"

Histories are tricky to find but Draven fought in the Clone Wars and told Cassian about the leaders.

"So he was a cyborg? Impressive," Alana says, finishing off her latte. "Were the droids in the service of the Republic?"

"No, the Separatists who were trying to leave the Republic had the clanker armies. The Republic had corruption within it, but war and then the Empire weren't the answer."

Clanker is a new term for Alana, and she resists rhs urge to smile at the slang. Instead, she nods thoughtfully. "I see. How could they afford to produce ao many droids?"

"They were allied with the Trade Federation and Commerce Guild which provided the money and I think with connections with the Senate itself. The politics get twisted quickly and a lot has been hidden as histories were buried,"

Technically he fought with the Separatists but the rocks he threw as a boy never felt connected to what went on in Coruscant.

"How did the Separatists produce enough droids without being crushed?" Alana says, furrowing her brow. "Given that the Republic already had a standing army of clones... Unless the clones were made after the droids?"

"I don't know which came first and no the clones weren't a standing army. They were made before the war or just before. The clankers weren't the best droids."

"I see," Alana says, shifting on her feet. "I don't know how long it takes to grow a clone or train one to be a soldier. The Empire has a standing army now, I presume."

"The Republic and the Empire always had an army, the clones were more. A history could give you more details,"

He sips his caf as the past while useful doesn't always help with now.
