Fives has taken apart his armor.
Oh, not his armor, but a selection he requested from bar that consistts of the same trooper helmet he wears, including the additional outside scope that hinges down over the eye slit, and the vambrace that contains the wrist comms he's used to. He's also picked up a holoprojector.
He's laid it all out on the table in his booth and he's taking the electronics out of the various parts, alternating between handheld tools as he works. What he's after is sonething that can combine the martial technology he is familiar with, with the ability to consume what he's beginning to think of as 'media,' in ways that better suit the person he watches that media with.
He's basically making a VR helmet.

I went down to join him. “Hello, Fives. Are you trying to fix something?”
no subject
Fives, ever the snacker, has a bowl of some crispy fried root vegetable slices to his side. Any one else joining him would have the bowl pushes towards them. This time he pushes it away, towards the back of the booth where he can stop helping himself.
"Not fixing, more a mod." He holds the helmet up - as yet it's still pristine white, but he's removed a the side panels to make it lighter, and to give him better access to the inside.
"Adapting a holoprojector and comms into the helmet. Have a look, see what you think - can we can link this to your feed?"
He's tried, but he's also making it up as he goes along.
no subject
“If you want to get on the feed, you’re going to need a feed interface,” I said. “I can get you one and help you set it up.”
no subject
It'll still be a weird combination, but Fives doesn't care how he watches Holos.
"I meant to ask you something, too. Can you do me a favour, with your drones?"
no subject
“Do you need my drones to watch for somebody?”
no subject
But he still thinks a feed would be nice. He's aware he only communicates with SecUnit in a limited way compared to what it's used to, and most of what they watch together doesn't translate to Fives' current tech. So - a helmet.
"Yeah," he says, in answer to the question. "Me. Or well, my face. Could you do that, so I'd know if one of my brothers showed up?"
no subject
“That’s pretty simple. Getting you set up with a feed interface will be more complicated. And most of the humans where I come from get access to the feed when they’re juveniles.”
no subject
no subject
“I’m going to say you’re not, because otherwise I’ll have to set up parental controls for you, and honestly nobody should trust me to do that.”
no subject
"Alright," he chuckles. "It's too late to start giving me a parent at any rate. What's the complication?"
no subject
That wasn’t the really sticky part though.
“Two, you need to be associated with a recognized political entity from settled space. Which normally requires using a government system from that political entity. I can use something else for the med scan, but giving you a citizenship ID or making the feed interface work without one will require a hack.”
I could make it work. I was pretty sure I could, anyway.
no subject
"When I came in from Orto Plutonia there looked like there had been a bacta tank in there before. The place is kind of sparse, it could do with some decent tech. Something that can do a good scan would be good."
no subject
If there was just something that could get the right data, and had a display surface, I could screen-scrape it and enter it in the kind of biometric file the feed interface needed.

His eye falls on Fives and, hmm, some of that armour looks familiar. He can't quite place it, but he's certain he's seen something like it before. He strides over to the man.
"What are you doing?"
no subject
"Adapting a spare helmet for media viewing," he answers, holding up the helmet in question. "Repurposing military equipment for R&R."
Technically theft and possibly a court martial offence. He's sure he's fine.
no subject
"Did you get permission from your CO?"
no subject
Poor Captain Rex has to deal with Skywalker. He deserves a holo marathon.
no subject
"What made you decide to do this?"
no subject
Fives tilts his head curiously, regarding the man addressing him.
"One of my friends here watches a lot of media through its feed. I wanted to do something we could share - link up for communication."
no subject
"Media? You want to talk to each other."
no subject
"That's it," he agrees. "No point to R&R on your own."
no subject
"Is it someone from here you're planning to talk to?"
no subject
"Yeah," Fives says. "We could use regular comm channels for talking back home."
Clearly.
no subject
"Can't you just see each other here?"
no subject
Actually SecUnit is easy to find: it's in the library.
"Why are you so interested?" - 'invested' is the word Fives means really. He seems very invested in Fives' communication with his friends.
