Fives has taken apart his armor.

Oh, not his armor, but a selection he requested from bar that consistts of the same trooper helmet he wears, including the additional outside scope that hinges down over the eye slit, and the vambrace that contains the wrist comms he's used to. He's also picked up a holoprojector.

He's laid it all out on the table in his booth and he's taking the electronics out of the various parts, alternating between handheld tools as he works. What he's after is sonething that can combine the martial technology he is familiar with, with the ability to consume what he's beginning to think of as 'media,' in ways that better suit the person he watches that media with.

He's basically making a VR helmet.

Fives was probably right that nobody here would take his stuff. People mess with my drones sometimes, but that’s because they’re high up and hidden, and humans get curious about stuff like that.

“DNA, fingerprints, eye scan, topographical map of your body from the waist up, same for the inside of your mouth. There’s some voice analysis and gesture analysis too, but I don’t need medical equipment for that.”

"That's a lot," Fives says. He frowns slightly, wondering what exactly he's signing up for. "All for security?"

“Some of it, like the genetic and fingerprint data and some of the eye stuff. Most of it is for calibrating the controls.”

Especially the voiceprint, since un-augmented humans typically send messages in the feed by subvocalizing.

Fives considers this and nods. The upshot of course is that a lot of his data, though not all, would translate over to any of his brothers if they ever did show up.

"Alright, let's see what the Medbay's got. I could probably get some of that data from home, though explaining to my Medic what I want it for is going to be... well, I guess I better tell him about this place."

“Okay. I have a friend who...”

Wait, I didn’t need to be vague about this stuff with Fives.

“My friend ART already knows about this place and, well, I told it about you. It may be able to help us with that registration issue.”

ART and its crew had ways of forging all kinds of legal documentation for their various anti-corporate missions.

"About me, specifically?"

Fives tilts his head, quirks an eyebrow. Part questioning qhy, but also weirdly touched. "My brother Echo knows, of course. But it's too weird to explain to the others."

“I tell ART about everyone I’ve met here. But it’s interested in you because you’re the first human friend I have who wasn’t a client first.”

ART kind of made an embarrassingly big deal out of it, but Fives didn’t need to know that.

“I should probably mention that ART’s a research and teaching vessel. It’s kind of like a bot pilot but a lot more sophisticated. And kind of an asshole.”

Fives grins, but doesn't make anywhere near as big a deal about the use of the word 'friend.'

He also doesn't mention that he's probably got more in common with SecUnit itself than with any of its clients.

"A ship's AI then? Alright." They don't have those, because ships are really prone to being destroyed ~~especially in the 501st~~ but it's not a stretch.

"How is it an asshole?"

“It thinks it’s smarter than everyone else. I mean, it is, but it doesn’t have to rub it in so much.” I rolled my eyes.

“But it’s an asshole who cares about its crew, which now includes me.”

(Between crewed missions, when ART is doing cargo runs, we’re by ourselves and we just watch a lot of media together. I guess that’s what being at home feels like to most humans.)

Fives is under the impression that SecUnit isn't used to people caring about it, and that it's uncomfortable thinking about it, so calling ART an asshole is probably a high compliment. Which tracks, because the clones he calls assholes are the ones he respects the most.

"And it'll help get me some sort of fake ID?"

“ART’s done much bigger forgery jobs than this.”

Securing the legal independence of lost corporate colonies requires a lot of paperwork, most of it carefully faked.

"Sure it has," Fives says. "Sounds like you have a lot of stories you need to catch me up on one of these days."

Now that Fives has a better idea of what SecUnit is, he's aware he needs to re-establish his mental image of what SecUnit does.

Yeah, I did. “I will. When you get a feed interface, I can even send you some clips from my memory.”

"That'd be cool," Fives says, quirking a sideways grin, because he imagines in some ways it'll also be very hard to watch. "Hyper-realistic holo programming."

Fives had never seen me do my job before. He didn’t have any idea about what SecUnits could do. He did a similar kind of job (well, there was a lot of shooting and mayhem involved in his job anyway), but he didn’t know what SecUnits could do, and it might come as a surprise.

(And not just to Fives.)

“I would prefer if you watched it in the feed or somewhere away from other people. I don’t want to share my memory recordings with just anyone.”

Both, most likely. Fives nods to confirm.

"Yeah, of course." He can even do things without sharing them with Echo, sometimes. "It's personal, I get that."

It would be different if it had anything to do with the war, and could be used from an intelligence perspective, but this is sharing of experiences between friends, and combat memories at that. Personal.

“All the non-depressing parts of my life happened after I disabled my governor module. Well, generally starting about 35,000 hours after that.”

I’d spent a while half-assing my job while consuming media, because I didn’t really know what else to do.

"How did you even do that?" Fives asks, curious. "Seems like they'd put better security on it if constructs hacking it was a risk."

“There are a lot of systems that aren’t secured very well because the humans who designed them aren’t imaginative enough about who can attack them and how.”

Or paranoid enough. (Both?)

“That’s not to say it was easy. If I hadn’t gotten it right the first time the governor module would have detected my attempt and locked me down. Then the company would have memory-wipes me again.”

There's a moment's pause. And then Fives states the very obvious.

"I hate the company so much."

Never mind this happens to droids a lot. Droids aren't people like this.

That’s why Fives and I are friends.

“My Preservation humans say that every corporation is fucking awful that way.”

Well, it’s mostly Ratthi who says that. But everyone in the Preservation deeply distrusts the corporations (and they absolutely should).

“But with the company, you know, it’s personal.”

"Some organisations don't have to be awful."

But yeah, okay even the Grand Republic isn't perfect, but it isn't THAT fucking awful.

"I mean, it's not like they don't make the choice to be karking shitheads. But yeah, personal."

Just means more hate.

“It’s more than just the company though. Rogue constructs - especially SecUnits - are dangerous. I would be fucking scared of me.”

Sometimes I think about trying to hack into the systems that deploy updates for constructs, to disable all their governor modules. There’s a reason I don’t do it (besides the very likely possibility that I would get discovered, caught, and stripped for parts).

Apart from the fact that it's scared of a lot of things.

"Yes," he agrees, "but anything with free will is scary if you piss it off enough. Look at the Sith."

“You’re going to have to brief me on what the Sith are first.”
