Happy Lunar New Year!
It’s the New Year under the ancient system, which Japan observed until roughly a century and a half ago, and Seimei still does. There are other people in the Milliways who celebrate it as well, but whether it is that time of year back home, or the Year of the Tiger, is uncertain.
No matter. Seimei has commandeered a booth, where he has a lot of stiff high-quality origami paper, most of it red. He has folded a number of little origami tigers, some of which are stalking back and forth or lounging like regal housecats with their tails twitching. He also has a frame on which he has hung paper amulets from various shrines and temples around Kyoto - since refreshing the household paper amulets was once a New Year’s tradition.
Seimei also has boxes of moon cakes under the table. This is a Chinese tradition, not a Japanese one, but the old seven-herb soup is a tradition he is not sorry to leave behind.
