"Ma?"
He walks in, blinking around, a little confused. A small enough child, lame leg trailing behind him as he turns his head this way and that, obviously looking for someone. The cane in his hands is clutched tightly.
"Ma? Ma? Mister Stroker sir? Ma?"
He's starting to think this isn't home.

Well, Tacit was always babbling about unicorns and his mother always spoke about phoenixes. If all that was true, then...well, a strange rabbit looking thing with enough manners to wave and smile wasn't that far out of the realm.

That...was a cat noise. Why was a rabbit making a cat noise?
"That's the wrong one, you know. You're supposed to-"
What noise did a rabbit make?
"-eat that carrot quietly..." he finished lamely.

"The one over there! Where I'm not! That way!"
And he points in the opposite direction, behind her.

But there's no carrot. She turns around, eyes wide and glistening, ears drooping. "Meoww ..." She sounds sad.

"Can I get your order, miss, if no one's helping you? And, uh, you wouldn't have happened to see my Ma around, have you?"
He hasn't seen her, so he doesn't know if she's a regular, but he figures he might as well ask. He can't remember what his mother's name is this week.

She smiles, keeping her left side hidden carefully,
"I don't think you are quite where you think you are. This is Milliways, and I am Hel."
no subject
"I'm dead?"
Well, that proved Ma wrong.
"Well, that proves Ma wrong. I told her I wouldn't be doing anything important before I died."
Then he looks up at her.
"But I thought that was a place, not a person."
no subject
She sighs, and shakes her head (careful to shake only away, not toward, him).
"I am Hel, but you are not dead. I am a goddess, not a place. I am told that later they name a place after me, but I don't like it because really I'm not a bad person. My daddy doesn't think so, anyway."
no subject
"That must be nice, having a Daddy. I didn't even know I was supposed to have one till people told me so. I just have a Ma. And she tells me all sorts of things, but I don't really believe her anymore cause she seems to tell me them whenever she can't think of anything better."

*Polly walks over to the little boy*
Are you lost, Honey?
no subject
"No, I don't think so. I think the place lost itself because I went into the right door but the wrong place is inside. So where did it go?"
no subject
*Polly smiles at the boy*
no subject
And he nods. Because he's a kid. He can handle this. At least until he thinks about it. Which he won't.
"Why'd I go someplace else? Is Ma here?"

"Hey...you lost your folks, kid?" She kneels in front of him so they're eye-to-eye. "Where'd you come from?"
no subject
"I came from outside. And I didn't lose my Ma so much as go out and come back and now she's not here so she lost me. Then again, the whole place lost me because it's not where it's supposed to be, so I guess it's not so big of a thing."
no subject
"...ok. What's your name?"
no subject
And he pulls away, wincing, waiting for it.
"And if you're going to kick the cane out, wait till I'm leaning on it more so I fall quicker. The wobbling aches later."

"Can you teach me how to swear like that? I'm not very good so far and Ma swats me when she catches me, but that's really good."
