No one can resist the Seth-cute

Seth is in his carrier, making "brrrt! brrrt!" noises. The carrier is on a table and Charlie is at the table, eating lunch and making "brrt! brrt!" noises right back.

[summary: Ron is powerless against the Seth-cute. Elaine learns about the Ramones. Joshua is also cute and Richard is a proud daddy. Charlie's worried about Seth's magic but Tom is reassuring. Asar-Suti sympathizes about Bartleby. Danny drops by briefly, for Seth is cute.]

Charlie finally frees Asar-Suti's hair from Seth's fist. "Um. Well."

Asar-Suti takes back his hair with a smile, conjures a thick, fluffy purple rubber ring and ties it back.

"Not a good question, huh? Sorry," he says, contritely.

"No, no. It's a good question. Just a hard answer. He's better physically. As far as his mood goes, though--and he got a scare the other day that puzzles me--it's an uphill battle."

"I've talked to him when he was in the bar a week ago; he seemed comparatively collected and was grateful for coffee, and rather coherently asked me about Lochiel. In fact, he told me more than I could tell him. What scare did he get, though?"

Asar-Suti's look is dark; who dares to scare Bartleby, hurt and as he already is?

Despite that, he keeps playing with little' Seth's fingers, gently teasing the baby to catch his own, and going 'Ooooh' when the small person succeeds.

"Seth did."

His face is thoughtful.

"Seth did??" Asar-Suti sounds incredulous.

"What happened? I heard the little fellow is an empath, but..."

"We've known since he was born that he cold feel what other people were feeling--but apparently he can make people feel what he wants them to feel as well. That scared Bartleby. Made him feel like he's not in control."

"Ouch - that is not good at all. Compulsion - it's one of the Cheysuli gifts, actually. Interesting that he has it."

Asar-Suti shakes his head. "I can understand that it makes Bartleby worried. Do you know what he made him feel?"

Charlie smiles wryly. "Happy. Seth made him feel happy."

"I guess it was meant rather nice of him, but I see where Bartleby comes from - I wouldn't want anybody compulsioning me, not even to make me feel happy. If I'm unhappy I have a reason, thank you."

Asar-Suti shakes his head. "Pity, though that Bartleby's proably not so in love with this sweet little fellow just now - it might place an additional strain on your relationship, and as far as I can tell, you rather don't need that right now."

Charlie presses his lips together and sighs. "On the nose."

"If I were in any way paranoid, I'd suspect that there's some malicious entity somewehre out in the multiverse that's out to get you two - if there's ever the slightest chance of things getting better, something else crops up and whacks you one," Asar-Suti says, almost angrily.

He looks at Charlie. "As a rule, nobody could object to a baby - but fate has given this baby something Bartleby can legitimately object to, so you're screwed over again and torn between both."

He makes a faces as if willing to go after whoever has it in for Charlie there and then.

"I don't see it as a choice between them," Charlie says. "There's no reason why I can't love and talk care of them both.

"Bartleby's just fragile right now. He'll get used to Seth. I know he will."

Asar-Suti sighs. "I hope he will - and Seth will hopefully soon learn that his efforts, though well-meant, are not always the right thing. Have you talked to Val about how little empaths grow up in her world? She must know."

He reaches out to touch Seth's cheek again. "Of course, babbies naturally want people to be happy around them, that's why they're so cute. And if he's an empath, the unhappiness bartleby was radiating must have hurt and worried him - how should he have been able to tell that it had nothing to do with him?"

"Exactly--I know he didn't mean any harm. I know he just wanted to comfort Bartleby. But . . ." He sighs. "Bartleby's gone mad before. Like, truly insane. And he's terrified of that happening again so he's clinging to his self-control . . ." He exhales. "When he's over that, when he can deal with all of this, he'll be better around Seth."

"If he's such a strong empath as evidence suggests, he might be able to help people hold on to their sanity, actually, later on," Asar-Suti muses.

"But for now, I agree - it might be better if Bartleby doesn't find his mind invaded. After all he went through, and all the changes, he will have to get used to himself again - or for the first time - as it is."

"Yeah, that's what I'm hoping. Just time for them to get used to each other, and for Bartleby to get used to being human.

"As for when Seth grows up . . ." He shakes his head, grinning when Seth imitates him wobblingly. "You can be anything you want to be, precious boy," he tells him.

"When Seth grows up, he'll be very, very special, and he will have some of the most interesting and competent people in the multiverse to teach him, starting with Val and Esk," Asar-Suti says.

Everybody thinks the babies they like or love are especially special, but in this case, it's true.

Yes, really. Really really.

Asar-Suti gets up. "I've got to go - I still have things to do before evening. Library and garden really keep me busay, which means I'm not going to cause much damage any more," he says, with a grin. "It was great talking to you and having my hair eaten by the little one - see you around!"

With a lttle wave to Seth, he goes away.

"Good night," Charlie says, and waves Seth's hand after him too.
