Seth is in his carrier, making "brrrt! brrrt!" noises. The carrier is on a table and Charlie is at the table, eating lunch and making "brrt! brrt!" noises right back.

He smiles and kisses Seth's hand that is tightly grasping his finger.

"Tom," he says as if the idea's just occured to him, which it has, "in your magic, do you have a way to tell what people are able to do?"

What do you mean?

"Can you sense magic in other people? Can you--h'rm--tell what they're strong in?"

[young_tmriddle]

Oh. Yes, I can, actually, if the magic's from the Wizarding world. Why do you ask?

"Well. When Seth was born Valentine Wiggin was there, and she said she cold sense he's an empath like she is. Which we've found, you know, he can tell what we're feeling and all that.

"It seems, though, that he can make people feel the way he wants them too, too. I'm trying to figure out if that's, like, the same kind of power or what, or if we're just finding too much in all of this."

You mean, he's influencing your actions?

"I haven't noticed anything myself, but he gave Bartleby a good scare the other day. B said he felt his emotions change when he was touching the baby. He didn't like it."

He sighs, clearly distressed, and then kisses Seth and rests his cheek against his forehead.

That's... odd. I've not heard of magic manifesting like that. In our world, we have curses and the like that control actions.

Would you like me to have a go? I might be able to detect nothing at all, but I can try.

"It won't hurt or scare him, will it?"

No, all it takes is a wave of the wand.

"All right." He arranges Seth in his arms so that he's facing Tom.

*Tom speaks the charm - it's a revealing charm used by many to assess the magical nature of children - and waves his wand over Seth. In the Wizarding world, children who possess magic will glow with a sparkly aura in response.

This does not happen, but something else does. A small swirl of sparkling magic appears around the babies heart. It stays for a moment and then disperses.*

That's not what usually happens. I will hazard to guess your child possesses magic of some kind, though.

Seth boggles at the sparklies. Shiny!

"Well," Charlie says quietly. "Some kind of magic, eh, Sethie?" He kisses Seth's head. "Thanks, Tom."

Say nothing of it.

*He looks slightly concerned.*

Who was Seth's biological father?

"Some bloke named Thomas back in Australia. Claire says there was nothing magical about him. And there's not really anything magical about Claire. I don't know where it might have come from."

Keep an eye on him. Mind controlling power - even if it's just control over emotions - is neither common nor carefree.

"He's two months old," Charlie says, confused. "He wouldn't even understand me if I said 'don't do that,' would he? I joke about him talking but he's completely preverbal, isn't he? Not even sure where his nose is."

He looks down at Seth and quietly beeps his nose. There it is.

No, he wouldn't. I meant, monitor him - write down when you think he's affecting someone. Children often manifest powers when they're too young to control them. When I was a boy, I started fires without knowing it when I was angered. One time, I nearly burned down my wing of the orphanage.

Magic has a dangerous side to it.

"Good god," Charlie murmurs and looks at Seth with amazement. Seth blinks back at him innocently and stuffs his fist into his mouth.

But hopefully this won't be a concern at all. Just... keep an eye open.

"We will." He strokes Seth's head with his palm. "You know, I never thought father hood would be easy but it just gets more complicated every day."

Tell me about it. I'm bloody baffled more than half the time. Ingress and Gavroche are easy children to deal with though. I certainly wouldn't know what to do with an infant.

"Don't drop them," Charlie says seriously.

I don't plan to get close enough to one for years to come. Perhaps then I'll muster up the courage.
