"Hi, Samantha," he says cheerfully. "This is Seth, my son."

Hi! Seth babbles. I'm Seth! I'm cute and everybody likes me!

"I've met him before, but he wasn't awake." Sam grins and makes a silly face at Seth. "He's so cute!"

Seth's arms wave. I know! Don't you want to be my minion?

"Yeah, we like him," Charlie says fondly. "Even though he won't eat his lunch."

"Have you tried the choo-choo train thing? Or the plane? My mom always did that for me when I was a kid." She says, reaching a finger out to touch Seth's arm.

"He gives me the 'you're daft, da' look whenver I try. Watch." He makes sputtering noises, bringing in the spoon to Seth's mouth like a drifting Sopwith Camel to the safety of a British airfield.

Seth watches the spoon skeptically and his lips stay shut.

"Maybe it's the type of plane. Try something...not so sputtery. Like a jet." Sam giggles. She gestures to the seat across from him. "Can I sit?"

"Sure.

"Seth! Hey, Seth, looky!" He waves the spoon around a little and starts to bring it towards the baby's mouth again.

Seth is not fooled by such trickery.

Sam sits across from them, taking a rubber band off her arm and pulling her hair back. "Maybe it's the type of food. I personally don't like plums all that much myself."

She makes another silly face at Seth and says in a baby-talk-voice, "And you'd much rather have some nice bananas or something, wouldn't you?"

Seth's eyebrows arch. You're not the baby! I'm the baby!

"He had bananas yesterday and the books says to give them variety." He tries a little of the plums himself and winces. "Ergh."

"Well, maybe mix them. Or mix the plums into rice cereal or something. It should dull the taste." Sam nods.

"I'll have to try that." He looks for a waitrat and Jeremy scampers over. "A little bowl of rice cereal, please, Jeremy? Thanks."

The little rat scurries away.

"How are you doing?"

"I'm alright. Bored. I finished my book." Sam plays with her finger.

"The bar will give you more books if you ask. She's got a good variety. Can get books from anywhere, literally."

Sam nods. "I know...I just want to do something other than reading. If I could go home, I'd probably be riding on my boyfriend's motorcycle going to some weird place with his friend Mark." She shrugs. "At least that's what we did before he left."

And showed up here...way before she did.

"There's a lake to swim in and stables, and you could probably persuade someone to teach you to ride a horse. I do yoga and go running when I need to stretch."

"I went swimming a few days ago, and I know how to ride a horse...I love animals." Sam nods. "I know there's things to do here, I just suppose I'm a little homesick. I go through this every few days or so."

Charlie nods in sympathy. "I can't go home at all," he says quietly. "Through the door it's just a deserted island, and for a few months I couldn't even go there.

"It's easy to get stir-crazy. But there's stuff to do if you look for it. People to talk to. Things to learn."

"There are worse places to be stuck I guess." Sam grins. "At least Milliways has Charlie Pace and Seth."

Charlie laughs. "There, you see? The best way to pass the time is to find people you like talking to, and talk to them. If you're very lucky you'll fall in love--very insane, you'll get engaged--"

"I am in love already!" Sam laughs. "My boyfriend is here after all."

"He is? Grand. There's one thing down.

"I met mine my . . . second day here. I think. Or third. I was a bit ill at the time. Details are fuzzy."

"Oh don't you tell me to get engaged! You'll be the fourth." Sam shakes her head. "And your...what? You can say boyfriend if that's what you have. I don't care. If you're happy, I'm happy."

"I'm not going to tell you to get engaged," Charlie says, grinning. "I never tell people to do something I wouldn't do myself.

"Boyfriend. Yes. Thank you for your approval. He's a lovely bloke. I quite adore him. Makes the relationship with Seth's mum a bit interesting but we're working on the family thing."
