Asar-Suti shrugs.

"Old history, on the scale of things in Milliways," he says.

"I see. You seem upset about it."

She was looking at his eyes rather than the shrug.

"Aeryn, I am immortal - half a year is the blink of an eye to me. On the other hand, I am a person, and in that half-year or a bit more since I had to give up on Lochiel, very many things happened to me, the best of them a certain pretty kitchen faun named Gil," Asar-Suti says. "So, on the one hand, I am over that defeat; and on the other, I will never quite be."

"I'm sorry, I'm not very good at understanding emotions."

Especially not those of a God.

"And your own - do you understand those?" Asar-Suti asks.

"Even less than I understand yours."

That would explain why she kept fighting with Atton. It would also explain why she'd assaulted two people in the past week. In her defence, they had deserved it.

"Not a very good situation," Asar-Suti says. "I hope you don't get into pain or trouble over that."

"There's already been a lot of pain. Most of it for me, though not all. Also, some drunken mistakes."

She frowned and then changed her mind and smiled. There had also been some drunken things that hadn't been a mistake, as it turned out.

"There always are - that's human life. Even for gods, believe me," Asar-Suti grins.

"I should believe you, but I'm not that trusting." She joked, a half-smile on her lips.

"Well, you're not likely to ever become a god, so you have to take my word for it," Asar-Suti said, raising an eyebrow.

"Maybe I will." She snorted slightly into her drink.

"You will what - become a god?" Asar-Suti asks, amused.

"I could if I wanted." She wasn't preening, no siree.

"Well, how would you do that? Studied any recipes yet?" Asar-Suti grins.

"I'm not going to admit that I'm not sure."

She may have been drinking, but probably she was just a little giddy.

"Well, you take one human soul, pledged to you in honest and fulfilled bargain..." Asar-Suti began, with a weird little grin.

"I don't think I could find one."

It may be rather scary that she's actually considering it.

"Depends on what you can offer them in bargain," Asar-Suti points out. "If you have the right thing to give, there's always somebody who'll sell their soul, sooner or later."

"I don't think I need anyone's soul."

She might sometimes be lacking one, but that didn't mean she needed to steal it.

"You do, if you want to follow my recipe for self-deification," Asar-Suti grins. "I never said it was easy being a god."

"But as a God you can kill whomever annoys you."

That sounded like a most pleasant prospect.

"Unless you're in Milliways, where you've got to keep the rules, even as a god," Asar-Suti laughs. "And I rather like being here, so I let some annoying little buggers live rather than leave."

"Pity, I know of a few people I'd kill without a second thought."

She figured he knew a few too.

He did.

"Yep, there's no light without shadow," he said.
