He's finally convinced Shannon to let him out.

Well, actually, she's fallen asleep and he needs to get out before he goes crazy, so he comes downstairs in a pair of khaki shorts and a white t-shirt.

He's still a bit sore, but he hopes the burger and coke he orders and takes to the booth with him will help with that.

Charlie sees him.

Charlie turns as pale as if he's seen a ghost.

He knows from Garion that Boone is alive . . . it doesn't make the actual sight of him, sitting there alive, any easier to take.

Still, he approaches the booth and says quietly, "Hey, Boone."

He looks up, seeing the wound on Charlie's head. "Hey, man, you okay?"

"Oh, yeah--it's nothing. Flesh wound. Hardly feel it. How are you?"

He accepts Charlie's answer for now, making note to ask how he got it later.

"I'm good. Still a bit sore, but hey, it's better than the alternative." He chuckles, trying to make light of his death.

"Yeah, the alternative kinda sucks."

Weird thing for them to have in common, really.

And then he remembers Charlie's situation, and the smile falls from his face and his voice lowers.

"Oh yeah, you..."

"I . . . am fine? Really? Alive and kicking?"

"Guess that makes both of us." He pauses a moment before he speaks again. "So, what's happening on the island?"

"Um, Michael, Sawyer, Walt and Jin took off on the raft. We thought the others were going to attack us but Rousseau was lying about them. She tried to take Aaron--Claire's son--but we got him back. And . . . and Shannon misses you."

He swallows. "I take it I wasn't so lucky on your island, huh?"

Charlie shakes his head and puts his hand on Boone's shoulder. "Sorry, mate."

"At least one of my made it." He forces a smile.

"Where is Claire?" He looks around the bar. "I haven't seen her in a few days."

"Um. She's got a place in New York. She's got this god who's getting married and moving to Las Vegas . . ." He waves a hand. It doesn't make a whole lot of sense to him. "Anyway, he gave her his place so she can go to school. I've been wanting to go see her, in fact. Since I got back."

"I thought she was staying in New Orleans?"

"Oh, mate, there was a hurrican. Half the city's under water. Do you know Richard Mayhew? He and his family were living there and had to vacate to Loki's place in Tokyo."

"I've heard Claire mention them. Man." He shakes his head. "That's insane."

"Fucking freaky weather," Charlie agrees.

"Beats island monsters, I'm sure."

"Well, you'd go more quickly if you were being eaten."

"Depends on how quickly you're being eaten, I suppose."

"Well, first you'd go into shock from the bloodloss so you wouldn't feel any pain--and depending on what's eating you they might do something else first, like smother you or drown you . . .

"Why are we talking about this?" He makes a face.

"I have no idea," he says, a small laugh escaping his lips. It causes his abdomen to hurt and he winces slightly.

"Do you need something? There's a doctor around, I think."

He shakes his head. "Naw, I'm okay. Just still a bit sore, but I'm feeling better. Thanks though." He eats one of the fries that are growing cold on his plate. "Want one?"

"Sure." He sits and takes a chip. "There was a bloke called Alton who came in once and made the best chips I've ever had. Crisp and hot . . . oh. Just perfect."
