Sundays are good. Sundays are quiet.

Nita should probably be doing homework, same as her mun, but instead she's wandering by the lakeside, skipping rocks, and thinking.

"You haven't seen me try yet," he points out.

She shakes her head and leads the way to the lakeside, finding an appropriate stone and handing it to him, then finding another for herself.

"Okay, first off, hold it like so." She demonstrates. "You want it to get the spin off your index finger."

He copies the way she holds the stone.

"Right." He does get that part.

"You throw it backwards, compared to a Frisbee." She demonstrates the throwing motion.

"And when you release, you want to think about getting the back edge to hit the water, not the front. The back edge makes it skip -- the front edge makes it sink."

"You think a lot about this," he says, watching the motion.

"It's like riding a bike or something like that. You think about it a lot the first couple times, and then it's easy."

She winds up and skips, and the rock makes it four skittering jumps before sinking.

". . .Okay, not always easy."

He throws his stone in after hers, but uses too much force, so that the motion isn't really right, and the stone slips quickly beneath the lake's surface.

"Not quite so hard," she corrects. "You don't want to chuck it."

"Yeah," he murmurs.

He picks up another and tries it again - it does skip a couple times, but he still seems more inclined to throw the rock like a weapon.

"More sideways," she corrects again, and demonstrates.

". . .Four skips? Geez, no wonder I cheat."

He follows the movement this time, but releases it fast as though eager to let go of it, so it skitters along the surface a little before sinking again.
