Toga Party

Atop a long table in one corner of the bar sits a row of punch bowls containing ladles and various cocktails: from margarita to plain screwdriver. These are accompanied by several bowls of ice, some containing various bottles of beer. There are stacks of plastic glasses, paper plates, napkins, and a large pile of ivy wreaths at one end. The drinks are buffet-style at this party, so help yourself.

There are plates scattered over the residual tables in the area, some overflowing with huge bunches of grapes, others containing savory fare such as chicken legs, hunks of bread, olives, cheese or humus dips.

To try and give an impromptu impression of a Roman/Greco theme, the tables have been topped with white tablecloths and chairs and surfaces strewn with ivy. If there had been a way to fashion columns or import colonnades in twenty four hours, Indy would have tried it. But ivy will have to do on short notice. At least its not poisonous.

"From the Japanese army actually. They found it frozen in the Himalayas."

"Ah, right."

beat.

"But did it eatcha?"

"No... I tamed it."

That's surely more impressive.

"Sounds like a pretty wussy dragon."

Apparently not.

"Yeah... it was," he concedes. "I ended up freezing it back in the mountains again. For its own safety as much as anything."

"So, what happens when it gets unfrozen again?"

"It's well hidden, and that place never thaws."

"Right, because in my time there's still frozen parts of the planet," Mel says, with not a little sarcasm, before finishing her bottle of Tequila.

"Well, maybe there's also a dragon running around. But it's more likely to be cowering in a cave somewhere."

"Or maybe it's dead now," Mel points out, conversationally. "Or maybe in your future, they do something about that solar radiation thing on time."

"I think dragons live forever, unless someone actively kills them. In history, when they were reportedly far more populous, they didnt have many natural enemies.But in my time, and undoubtedly yours, such creatures might have a few problems staying alive with all the firepower available."

"Sure," Mel confirms. "So there's a very good chance it'll have been killed by now."

After that insightful bit of historical nonsense, Indy tilts his head back and drains his cup, crushing the plastic in his fist when he's done. Macho much? Now he needs a new cup, and he looks a little sheepish.

And Mel is without a drink herself. She'd smash the empty bottle, but that never ends well, so she thrusts it at Indy, looking for a refill.

Indy interprets the gesture with a look of some bemusement. "That was the last of the tequila... now we're stuck with virgin margarita for the next batch." His tone is reproachful, but he's joking, probably. The wait rats have been topping the bowls up and bringing new supplies, there just isn't a fresh bottle of tequila available at this point.

Without much thought to civility or the other party guests, he takes the empty and submerges it in the margarita mix, allowing it to fill slowly. When it gets about half full he hands it back impassively, now covered in sticky cocktail and dripping everywhere.

Mel grins as she takes the bottle, wiping it on the nearest available loose piece of fabric, which just happens to be Indy's toga.

"Thanks," she says.

He doesn't seem to care. The loose drapery is basically falling apart anyway, and its entirely possible that she gets a pretty good view of his boxers if she tugs too hard. "No problem."

So there's a whole lot of not caring going on, which is just fine with Mel.

"So, what d'you want to drink to?" she asks.

"Tim's return would seem appropriate, and the Roman Empire, who are responsible for the opportunity to see you in that delectable toga. And... tequila."

"To Tim pullin' a Buffy" she drinks, "Roman lack of imagination," a drink "and Jose Cuervo" a third.

"Lack of imagination?" he questions after swigging from a new cup. "The toga is a fine piece of comfort wear. The Romans gave us plenty of other stuff as well. Um... the aqueduct... sanitation... and the roads go without saying."

She looks at him oddly. "I didn't say anything about the roads...2

Undeterred, Indy is continues to reel off some more cultural advances in that dry monotone he slips into when he's lecturing.

"Medicine, a legal system, irrigation, public baths, and let's not forget the wine. And it's safe to walk in the streets at night now. They certainly knew how to keep order."
