Guppy has positioned himself just outside the infirmary, eating his dinner rapidly. He's not prepared to leave Will alone longer than he has to.

He looks like he hasn't slept properly in several days.

"Greetings, Guppy!"

It is Teja. A rather relaxed Teja, one might say, if one knew him at all.

"Hey Teja." Little smile. The emotional rollercoaster he's on goes up slightly as he sees someone reminding him of the good things in his life right now.

"Is anything amiss?" Teja asks.

Guppy looks as if there was.-

"Doc's been demoned, Will's been hurt."

"That is bad news indeed," Teja says. "Is it known who did it? And what -- demon?"

Teja would not be certain that he believes in demonic possession. But if it happens in this place, of course he has to.

It would be very stupid not to believe in that which is manifest reality.

"Whatever Brand is doing to people. Doc's got it."

"Brand infects men with demons?" Teja asks, very astonished. "I did not know that -- I believed he stole them!"

"I don't know what it is, but he can do something to people to make them want to go with him, not just take them teleporting."

"He should better not try that with me," Teja says, grimly. "He cannot have anything I would want! Unless it be his life, for me to take."

"He could try it with any of us. I have the minor advantage of being almost useless to him because I have to be fully cognitively functioning to be useful."

"I can fight while insane," Teja says. "In fact, one might say, I have often done so. So he might be interested in me. Good."

"No, not good, we don't need anyone else turned."

"But I would not be turned," Teja says. "I would use the alarm, and the weapon Atton gave me, and then I would use my axe upon Brand, and that might put an end to this."

"Yes, that's a good plan. Except what if he's too quick and freezes you up?"

"If one thought about 'except what if', one would not be able to fight well," Teja says.

Pause.

"I am dead. He cannot kill me again -- and even that, I would risk."

"For us? That is noble indeed."

Guppy rubs his head. "Are you ambitious. We may have a pattern of victims."

"It is not nobler than any other thing I have done while alive," Teja says. "I have ever been one to fight for the men and ideas he holds dear, and risk all for them. It is my fate: - why should it change, for a small thing like death?"

Pause.

"A pattern -- a certain kind of men that he would pick, and try to turn?"

"Yes. People who want to be able to do more."

"I know what I can do," Teja says, "what I have done, and what I would do. He might not want that?"

"I don't know how it works, sorry."

"I cannot change myself," Teja says, "but if he approaches me, I will do what I can to put a stop to him."

Guppy hesitates for a moment, then speaks quietly.

"If he tries to take me, and I cannot take him down, I will make it impossible for him to turn me. Fortunately I have enough knowledge to make it a temporary measure, but it will be dangerous for me and probably very upsetting for those around me. However, compared with losing my mind and being taken out of here, it is a small price to me. I don't want the others having to risk their lives trying to rescue me from another place unnecessarily."

"And what would you do?" Teja asks.

"If I can't take him down? I'll take myself down. I'm currently debating whether a migraine would be enough, or whether I need to go for full unconsciousness. In any case, I'm not going to be walking out that door, and it's going to make it a damn sight harder for him to move me."

He shrugs. "I'll pick something reversible, obviously."

"How would you be able to induce such a thing on purpose?" Teja asks.
