Guppy has positioned himself just outside the infirmary, eating his dinner rapidly. He's not prepared to leave Will alone longer than he has to.

He looks like he hasn't slept properly in several days.

"Inject a medical drug into my thigh. It's not a very good plan, I know, but I can't think of any other ways to make my mind inpenetrable without turning the stun gun on myself, which if I'm at that stage he'll probably be able to stop me from doing."

"Then you shall be ill," Teja says, "and useless to him. But it would be most helpful if you could also use the alarm, so others may come and deal with him, if he hasn't fled."

"Well I'd do that first. Alarm, stun, sabotage, in that order. Unless the stun hits, of course."

Small shrug. "I don't think it will come to that anyway. Kate's taking a task force out soon. Brand would be a fool to turn up here now he thinks he has Doc doing his work."

"I will speak to her, then, when I see her," Teja says, "so I may go with them, if there is any use for me."

Guppy nods.

"If you don't fit the target for being taken over, I'm sure she will find a use."

"I come with my axe," Teja says. "Soon, maybe even one fitted with a vibroblade from Atton Rand's world. I can do damage. That should be enough."

"Remember he can freeze people." Guppy warns. "You may need a projectile weapon."

"I have spears," Teja says. "Also, a bow in the Sarmatian style, and arrows with trilobate heads."

"I'm not sure you'll have time for a spear, but a bow sounds promising."

"There is always time for a spear," Teja says; "it is the shield that must be left aside when the fight turns very fast."

That is how Teja had died -- rather killing the enemy than protecting himself.

"I don't think your shield would be much good anyway."

"No," Teja says. "Attack is the best defence! I will not take a shield, if I may come along."

Guppy nods.

"I'm not really the one to advise when it comes to battle, you're far more experienced than me."

"But I have never fought a man that would use magic," Teja says. "That is new for me, also."

"Me neither. Not even unsuccessfully."

"Have you ever fought a man at all?" Teja asks. "With weapons, not with fists?"

Any man would fight with fists in the course of his life, even one as peaceful as Guppy, one would assume.

"With fists, yes, with weapons, no. Not unless you count the practice sparring with Atton with swords."

"So at least you have wielded a sword before," Teja says, approving.

"I think I managed to cut myself."

"That would happen if you pick up a sharp-edged weapon," Teja says. "It is different from a wooden practice sword."

"Well yes. But you're talking to the man who once flipped a throwing knife into his own hand."

"So you would claim you are naturally inept at handling bladed weapons?" Teja asks. "Would you not have to handle knives, as a healer, if some bad wound needs cutting? I am making very sharp, small blades for one named Rebecca."

"Well yes, but I don't throw them."

"You would not throw swords, either," Teja points out.

"You don't perform surgery with them either. A small movement at the wrist makes a bigger movement with the blade. In surgery the movements are small."
