Happy Hour!

It hasn't been particularly long since John found himself in Milliways last. Only a month or so, but much has happened, and his head is still rather buzzing with it. Wendigo and Shadow-Born, and Jack losing his shadow, and seeing a boy-king claim his heritage, and Jack's fall and redemption.

And coming back to Staffordshire just in time for Edith to tell him that she's expecting (though that's a happiness he'll keep to himself for the time being).

He's a bit surprised to find himself here, really. He'd almost thought that Milliways must be connected to the Archipelago somehow and that he wouldn't find it again until he returned there, and he's pleased to discover that's not the case.

So when he steps up to the bar to order himself a drink and is given a napkin requesting a favor instead, he smiles and asks if there are any instructions, gets pointed in the direction of the Book, and cheerfully takes his place behind the bar, rummaging through said book for a moment before posting the evening's specials.

"Then you've done the hard part," Mia says reassuringly. "The first year is the toughest."

"I'm afraid I've been away for most of it," John says. "Our 'first year' isn't likely to start for quite some time yet."

[gorgonfondness]

"Ah. I know how separation can be. When Draco and I were courting, he was away at a war in his home."

[john_not_ronald]

"It's the same for me," John says. "I'm in the British Army, and I've been in the trenches or in hospital for most of our marriage."

[gorgonfondness]

"You're British?" Mia asks happily. "You're kidding me. My husband's from Wiltshire."

[john_not_ronald]

"Is he really?" John asks with a smile. "I'm from Staffordshire, myself, a bit north of there, but I hope to be at Oxford again once the war is finished."

[gorgonfondness]

"My husband was essentially a refugee to my world from his war, as well as his uncle. Family ties put them on a side they didn't want to be on, you see. But Draco does miss it sometimes and likes to visit. We hope that, when the baby is older, he'll be able to attend Draco's alma mater in Scotland."

[john_not_ronald]

"What is his alma mater?" John asks. "I might know it."

"Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry."

[john_not_ronald]

John's eyebrows go up. "Oh...uh...no, then. I haven't heard of it."

[gorgonfondness]

"I was thinking you likely hadn't unless you knew about the Wizarding World."

[john_not_ronald]

"Not as a place so closely overlapping my own world, certainly."

[gorgonfondness]

"Draco used to think much the same thing about the world without magic. His family fancies themselves as pureblood wizards. His parents used to be dead set against him marrying me because I have no family tree to prove my magical lineage."

[john_not_ronald]

"I'd wager a guess his world is not the same as my own. At any rate, I was referring to a geographical overlap. Not a societal one."


[ooc: Gah! Too many pups!]

"Oh no, I meant it's both," she says. "There is both a geographical and a societal overlap between Wizarding England and England as you know it. I've had to go through parts of England that weren't overtly magical to get to the places my husband knows. Places like Diagon Alley in London. And besides that, there are sometimes wizards born into non-magical, or as my husband calls them Muggle, families. And sometimes wizards marry into non-magic families. They are, ultimately, all just people living in one place."

[john_not_ronald]

"That's what I meant," John says. "I don't know of any wizarding world that geographically overlaps the non-magical community in my world. I do know of a magical world that exists elsewhere."

[gorgonfondness]

"Oh I see. Makes sense."

Beat.

"I sometimes wonder about all of these versions of Earth. It can be rather confusing. And I wonder about other versions of Lunar. I met a friend from a different version of Lunar and I have met my descendant, but I don't think either of them come here anymore."

"You met your descendant? That must have been fascinating."

For a moment, he wonders what he would do if he could see his own, not-yet-born child in the future.

[gorgonfondness]

She nods.

"From about a thousand years in my world's future. She gave Draco a right start, talking about how I had long since passed before telling him that important little detail."

[john_not_ronald]

He chuckles. "I can see how that might be cause for confusion, yes."

Having recently encountered someone who claims to remember the future, this straightforward time-traveling business seems remarkably easy to deal with.

Mia has some confusing time travel business which lead to her being in love with her husband some twelve years before he ever met her, but we digress.

"She was very impressed to meet me. It seems the travels I made with my friends will be remembered for some time."

[john_not_ronald]

"That's quite something to live up to, don't you think? You've got to live a life worthy of remembering."

[gorgonfondness]

"I've had that problem since birth due to my family's position and my mother's own adventures as one of the Four Heroes. Quite the shadow to live in. But I've learned that there is no reason to let it bother me. I do not have to be my mother. I do what I can and it seems that it has been enough."
