Carlotta is in the main bar, with her school report.

She has to laugh, just a little, when she sees her French result. Because of a certain bet she has with a certain king in the forge.

She looks around for him; she'll try outside if he's not in.

"But time is stopped in your world; we'd only be in the garden."

"Oh, by "out back," you meant out back of here." said L, feeling foolish. Sure, I'd love to see them."

Carlotta tucks her report in her pocket.

"They're Teja's really." she says, getting up to show him. "But he lets me ride them. They're awfully sweet-natured."

L sips away the rest of his coffee and gets up to follow Carlotta.

Carlotta goes out to the stables and up to the horses.

"They're behind the gates, so they can't hurt you."

L tentatively approaches the horses. "Are you sure?"

"Yes Ryuga-san." She reaches up to stroke Bramble's nose.

"This is Bramble."

A memory popped into L's mind. He reached into his pocket and pulled out one of his emergency sugar cubed. He put it in the palm of his hand and held it up to the horse.

"It feels awkward." said L, as the horse licked the sugar cube.

"Really? I find it sort of tickles." Carlotta kisses the horse on the nose.

L continued to stand there feeling awkward while the horse licked up the last of the sugar cube.

"So," he said, "do you know these animals well?"

"Yes, Orion lets me stand on his back."

"Interesting" said L. "Are they your horses, or do they belong to the bar?"

"No, they're Teja's." Carlotta says again. "He's a sort of guardian of mine here."

"Ahh, I see."

The smell was starting to get to L. They didn't stink, but they smelled like horses.

"Well," said L, trying to be as polite as possible, "I think I've had my fill of horses today."

"All right. You touched them, which was pretty brave."

"Thank you." said L, starting to head back. "I find the best expierence is hands-on expierence.

"Of course. A horse knocked me out once, but I got back on again as soon as I was out of hospital."

"That's very brave of you. My line of work sometimes puts me in grave danger. But, I always feel compelled to continue."

"Wasn't the horse's fault."

"Oh?" said L, "Tell me about it."

"One of my classmates, Fern, got on an unbroken horse trying to get our attention. She couldn't ride, and he bolted with her. I chased them on the horse I was on, and managed to stop them, but after we dismounted her parents came racing up and startled the horse. Apparently I took a hoof to the head."

"Were you angry?"

"No, why should I be?"

"Well, you did get kicked in the skull."

"It was an accident."
