Door swings open, a pale girl walks in. New clothes, same blank expression, a book in her hands, the first thing the Fledgling does is check the sign she left, and then move to a seat.

Definitely not by the fireplace or the observation window, both being way too distracting and at times unnerving: a nice booth will do.

The book holds her attention for all of three minutes, before she closes it and focuses on people-watching.

"Yes?" Teja says. "Who?"

"I found her slipping into the cold dark abyss and cured her flesh with a gift of red vitriol. She will live stronger for a while, then become like she was before again."

"Your blood saves lives?" Teja asks, interested.

"A mortal fed vampire blood remains mortal; but stops aging, becomes stronger, and heals wounds faster." She is quoting, yes. "More than mortal but still mortal and human."

"But the effect wears off?" Teja asks.

"After a month, I was told, unless the mortal is fed vampire blood again."

"It is a great gift," Teja says. "How odd that men will hunt those that can provide it."

"First, they don't know. Second, they don't care."

"Men in your world are stupid," Teja states, blankly.

"But how they would know, at all?" The Fledgling tilts head. "Who goes around drinking the blood of enemies... besides the Kindred?"

"And if they knew, I'm sure they would strap us down and milk us dry over and over to have eternal life."

Teja is silent, considering what she said, and what he has heard before.

"You might be right," he says, quietly.

"Captive and starved for eternity." Not what she would want for her neverending life.

Teja shudders: - this is truly gruesome to think of!

"So, the Masquerade." Keeping their secrets is good, knowing how humanity would react to learning them.

"Indeed," Teja says, with a sigh.

The Fledgling reaches to pat his arm with her cool hand.

It is a bit chilly night in Santa Monica. "You do not worry about it. We are not going to tell humans about the things vampire blood does."

"Good," Teja says.

She nods again. "Sometimes I miss the hardships of living flesh: I do not tire anymore like I did, and in the evening I always rise refreshed completely." Unless hideously injured, but she was not hideously injured yet.

"I think nobody else will answer my sign."

"New people arrive from time to time," Teja says. "There will more food. And perhaps the strong and filling assassin will feed you again."

Keep him busy. Keep him excited and fulfilled. Perhaps he'll forget about threatening Guppy and scaring Carlotta.

"If I meet him again. Maybe." And there is another thing. "It would be strange to approach people to ask for their blood."

"It is not their duty to give the red sweetness to me."

"They might tell each other how sweet it is to be drunken from," Teja says, "and will approach you on the quiet, when they learn who you are?"

"How many of them would comment to other people how they fed a vampire?" The leechling flashes a bright grin. "How being fed from made their flesh quiver and their minds squeal in bliss?"

"I think some men quite like to brag about their conquests," Teja says, "even the edgier ones."

"Being latched on by a vampire, your neck punctured and your blood drank almost drop by drop, three eternal mouthfuls... a few seconds feeling like an eternity you wish were real."

She grins to Teja. "That is a conquest?"

"The attendant pleasure qualifies it as such," Teja smiles.
