Chandler's always known that eventually, he'd get caught. You can only skive off of work to go to a bar so many times before someone notices. He'd just never expected that someone to be the Bar.

He's being put to work, because he keeps ditching work. That's the way he sees it. He's never tended a bar. He's never even waited tables. He's had one job his entire life, and that was statistical anayalsys and data reconfiguration. Still, he goes behind the Bar, and fumbles around, trying to figure out what it is he's meant to be doing. Eventually, he comes up with a plan.

And that exhausts the list of things he can make on his own. Grabbing a Yoo-hoo for himself, he sits back and waits for something to happen.

"Because that was the sort thing my parents made me do," Chandler explains. "Swim team, choir, theatre, dance."

He's pretty sure they thought he was a girl, actually.

"Huh." Ellen shakes her head. "We had a therapy pool in the Vault, and sometimes people learned to swim there, but that was it. And the choir was just for church services, not anything big or formal."

"I don't think there was really a point to choir at an all-boys prep school, but my parents still made me take it."

"Weird," Ellen says. "But that's pre-war people for you, I guess. How long was school, for you?"

"I went to a public grade school, and then when I was twelve, my parents moved me to a private middle school," Chandler starts. "Then when I was 14, my mom sent me off to boarding school so she could do book tours for her novels that she wrote. I graduated that when I was 18, and went to NYU for college, and graduated that when I was 21."

So, most of his life, really.

"Mom wanted me to go to Princeton, but I wanted to see New York."

Ellen nods. "I've heard of Princeton," she says. "They had a heck of a nuclear physics program. Some of the greatest space program scientists came from there, but I guess if you're not going to study that kind of thing that's not the place to go. New York was good, though?"

"Princeton's good for studying other things, too," Chandler says. "My whole family went there. I just wanted to slum it up for a little bit."

"Oh. Huh." Ellen considers this, then shrugs. "I wouldn't even know where to start looking. I can find New York on a map, and I think Boston, but that's about it, university-city-wise."

"Princeton's in New Jersey," Chandler explains. "It's right next to New York."

"Got it," Ellen says. "Okay. Well- it must have been interesting either way."

"Interesting's one way to put it," Chandler agrees. "Scary's another word I might choose."

"Oh?" Ellen blinks. "Why's that?"

"Well, ya know. I went from having everybody tell me my next move for 16 years to trying to find a job and an apartment and doing everything on my own," Chandler explains. "But, yeah, it was scary, but I'm glad I did it. If I took my mom's track, I'd still probably have other people making my decisions for me."

Yeah, he's letting his spoiled rich kid background show again.

"Ah." That gets a nod. "Well, that's not so different, really. I mean, everybody has to start taking on adult duties sometime, right?"

"Well, you'd think," Chandler says. "I still think you should meet Joey."

"Joey being- oh, wait," says Ellen. "He's the one who speaks Italian, sort of? I think?"

"Yeah," Chandler says. "He's a pretty all-right guy. I've lived with him now for a couple of years."

Ellen nods. "If he ever comes here, or if the chance ever arises otherwise, maybe," she says. "He sounds interesting, anyway."

"You could always come to New York," Chandler points out. "It's just a quick trip."

He points at the door.

"Maybe once I get my plans for going south figured out," Ellen says. "You'd have to figure out what to tell people about where I come from, anyway. I'm not very good at passing for someone from a world that hasn't had the Bomb go off."

She's tried.

"You kidding?" Chandler asks. "It's New York. You'd fit right in."

If he makes sure Joey and Phoebe are in the same room, no one will notice Ellen's quirkiness at all.

"The next time I'm in Megaton, I'll come looking for you from there," Ellen says. "We can talk about it then- that's where my pre-war clothes are. You could always get a look at Megaton yourself, of course."

"I'd love to," Chandler says, not realising what he's getting himself into.

"All right," says Ellen. "Bring your own coffee, though. I've never seen any there."

"Duly noted," Chandler says with a nod. "Should a bring a coffee pot too, or instant stuff?"
