Karkat has not been in the bar lately; there is a good reason. When he is ready to work and not be enjoyably distracted by frustrating idiots, he has a tendency to hole up and hammer things out. He has been churning out pages and pages of screenplay in the last weeks.

He is back to working in the bar, which is a signal from his subconscious that he is not going to be able to blast through this scene with high explosives and could benefit from distraction and talking it over with others. It is the important scene near the middle of the movie where the Captain's romantic date with the Mechanic is interrupted by his discovery that she is the traitor. You can tell when he hits it because the steady pounding of his hands on the keyboard slow to a crawl, and he spends a lot of time glaring yellowly at the screen of his crabtop.

"YEAH I GUESS," he says, grudgingly, although he brought the topic up.

"You Guess? Normally You Call Her Some Variant Of Furry Freak And Brush Her Off. This Place Has Been Good For You."

And so has Nepeta, evidently.

"SHE IS SOME VARIANT OF FURRY FREAK," he says stubbornly. "SHE IS JUST TURNING OUT TO BE A SURPRISINGLY TOLERABLE ONE."

She gives him a knowing an amused look in response.

"Gotten Used To Her And Miss Not Having Her Around Sometimes, Like A Few Other People?"

She gets a suspicious one in return. "HAVE YOU BEEN TALKING TO HER, IS THAT WHAT THIS IS?"

"It Was One Feelings Jam Before I Left, And No, I'm Not Telling You What We Talked About."

"FINE, NO ONE CARES ABOUT YOUR GOSSIPY NONSENSE, I AM JUST TRYING TO FIGURE OUT THE REASON FOR YOUR SCRUTINY."

Amused:

"Scrutiny?"

"OF MY FEELINGS FOR OUR TEAM MASCOT."

"Can You Blame Me For Wanting To Make Sure You're Happy?"

He rolls his eyes. "YEAH, WELL, THE LAST THING THIS SITUATION NEEDS IS ANOTHER GOOPY MATCHMAKER INVOLVED. JUST RELAX AND LET THINGS HAPPEN THE WAY THEY ARE GOING TO, AND IF YOU ARE TALKING TO HER ABOUT THIS THEN PASS THAT ON TO HER."

"I Never Said I Was Going To Insert Myself As Matchmaker," she says fondly, smoothing a hand absently over his hair. "I Am Hardly Anything To Aspire To, Relationship Wise. That Said, You Know I Will Always Listen If You Need Me To."

He snorts, and bats her hands away from his rumpledness. "YOU SHOULD NOT BE WORRIED ABOUT ME, NEPETA IS THE ONE WHO HAS NURSED THIS LITTLE FLUSHCRUSH FOR SWEEPS. AND SHE IS, YOU KNOW, DEAD. I AM WORRIED I AM GETTING UP HER HOPES FOR NO REASON."

She doesn't let the batting deter her, carefully working her fingers through his hair, regardless.

"Wiggler Steps," she soothes. "Don't Press Things If They Don't Work. Ask Her To Do Something Private With You First, See How It Goes."

"OBVIOUSLY, BUT I AM CONCERNED THAT I AM SETTING HER UP TO GET HURT JUST TRYING TO DO ANYTHING AT ALL. MAYBE SHE WOULD BE BETTER OFF IF I JUST LEFT HER TO HER OWN AFTERLIFE DEVICES."

And suddenly, it's not fingers combing through his hair. With most the snarls out, she's now running a brush through it.

"You May Be Our Leader, But That's Something For Nepeta To Decide On Her Own. If Nothing Happens Between You Two, Then Nothing Happens. You're Over Thinking Things."

"IT IS UP TO ME TO DECIDE WHAT IS EVEN POSSIBLE AND GIVE HER A CLEAR DIRECTION ON THAT, RATHER THAN SETTING HER UP FOR A DISAPPOINTMENT. I DON'T KNOW HOW WE CAN EVER HAVE A BALANCED RELATIONSHIP WHEN SHE IS ALREADY CRUSHING THIS HARD AT THE START AND I AM FEELING RELUCTANT."

"I WILL ALWAYS HAVE THE UPPER HAND AND THAT WILL MAKE ME A HUGE DOUCHEBAG AS USUAL. I REALLY DON'T THINK I COULD TAKE IT IF I BURNED HER OUT THE WAY I DID TEREZI."

"She May Be Crushing, But She's Not Pressing It On You, Is She? She's Told You How She Feels, You've Decided That You Two May Try Something, And From There That's Something You Two Need To Figure Out Together."

"SEE, THAT IS THE THING, SHE HAD ALREADY MADE UP HER MIND THAT THERE WAS NO CHANCE AND NOW I AM BACK DANGLING THE DELICIOUS ENTRAILS IN FRONT OF HER SNORTHOLE AGAIN."

Brush brush brush.

"You Aren't Leading Her On, Just By Saying You're Willing To Try Things. It Just Means There's A Chance, Not 'FUCK YES, WE'RE DOING THIS, THIS MATESPRITSHIP IS TOTALLY HAPPENING'."

Karkat groans and closes his eyes. "I CAN'T BELIEVE I AM TAKING THE TIME TO WORRY ABOUT THIS STUFF NOW WITH SO MUCH ON THE LINE. BUT WE ARE STUCK HERE FOR FUCK KNOWS HOW LONG..."

"This Place Does Have A Way Of Making Things On The Other Side Of Our Doors Seem A Little Further Away."

"I JUST HOPE TO NOT HAVE ANYMORE FIFTEEN MINUTES JAUNTS, IT'S TOO FUCKING CONFUSING. THE NEXT TIME I GO BACK THERE I HOPE IT IS TO WRAP THIS ALL UP. ONE WAY OR THE OTHER."

"SPEAKING OF BUYING TIME HERE FOR QUADRANT SHENANIGANS, HAVE YOU MANAGED TO LOCKDOWN ANY OF THE PEOPLE PASSING THROUGH HERE TO OCCUPY ONE OF YOURS? I HAVEN'T HASSLED YOU ABOUT THIS IN A WHILE..."

The hands working at his hair promptly stills, and Kanaya flushes jade through the glow.

"I...Um...That Is To Say...

No."
