Agent K is at the bar, enjoying a glass of Eli Lockhart's finest bourbon, and minding his own business until somebody decides to help him mind it.

[And unless he gets Milli-timed into this disaster in the making.]

Sameth is experimenting with batteries and magic, his little section of the counter has lots of sparks around it.

He's acquiring some interesting new burns as he figures out how to trap electricity, some of the sparks escape and one zaps K.

Fortunately, K is always well-grounded. But he's also curious, seeing as how he has a good idea of what Sameth is capable of.

"What've got going there, Tiger? New line of research?"

"Oh, hello, yes, I'm working on a project with batteries and electricity."

"You don't say," K replies, and slips off his chair to stroll over to Sameth's. "This a military application or pure research?"

"A commission though it might end up being useful in the Old Kingdom."

"I didn't think they went in for that kind of thing. You getting them to be a little more open-minded about it?"

"I need to get electricity and the Charter to work together first. The commission isn't going to involve the Charter as its for someone from here."

"Branching out, huh? That's good, Sameth. Young man of your talent ought to do well getting work around here."

"What's your client looking for, if you don't mind my asking?"

"A way to store electricity. I always like new projects, they're the best way to learn."

"Makes a hell of a display," K admits, as another shower of sparks erupts.

"I'm working on that part. I know how batteries work, so I'm making one but with some modifications,"

He tries to clean up a little to limit the sparks.

"Like getting a longer lasting charge?"

Storing it so nothing's lost and she can access it when she needs to."

The Man in Black nods. "Once you've got that covered, you might ask Bar to give you a book about capacitors. They can store energy like nobody's business. I wouldn't mind seeing what you could do with one of those myself."

"I've heard of them. I think Ellen has them in her world?"

"She does at that," K says.

"Hell, around there, you could probably find a few lying around any science installation. Save your money and learn something rebuilding one."

"I might since that's how I prefer to figure things out."

"Always the best way."

"Unless you're into xenobiology. Then you're better off waiting 'til it's dead."

"They get annoyed otherwise."

He's kidding. Probably.

"Xenobiology, that seems dangerous. I mean what I do is dangerous but in ways that I can usually control."

"Only when it's trying to eat you or just kill you."

"'Course, that does tend to be most of the time. The galaxy has more than its share of cranky types."

"Everywhere does, you don't want to get on Yrael's bad side,"

Sameth's family kind of lives there.

"Heard about him. Never actually met."

"Sort of cat, but not, right?"

"Cat shaped, sometimes, he's a creature of Free Magic,"

He's more than that but Sameth's not sure how to start explaining the Bright Shiners.

"So what makes Free Magic different from the garden-variety kind?"

"It's chaotic and destructive. Were you here for the Ends?"
