Job done. The bad guys are dead and the girls are home safely. Overall, Jay’s in a pretty good mood. Time to kick back.

He may have had a few before he started his shift but that doesn’t seem to be affecting his game much.

"And captains." Jay teases, pouring them both another drink.

"Then we should hope I never get promoted, lest me efficiency drops sharply," Sherral says wryly.

"I'm pretty sure your men would revolt if your hierarchy tried to take you away by promoting you." He tops up both their glasses. "How are things going with the new boss?"

"I think you overestimate how attached they are," Sherral chuckles. "I've yet to meet the man. Which isn't entirely unusual. A Consul has more to deal with than just keeping the garrisons in line."

"I think they respect you more than you give them credit for." And maybe fear a little.

"Somehow I doubt your garrison's likely to get out of hand."

"I should probably trust your judgement on that," Sherral admits. "You spent a fair amount of time amongst them."

Jay raises his glass in a toast. "You have good men with a good leader."

"You are a terrible flatterer," he remarks wryly, raising his glass.

"Yeah, but you've known that about me for a while now." Jay grins and sips the whiskey. "I think I have a new favourite drink!" A little drunk? Maybe!

"Don't drink it too quickly," Sherral warns. "It has a kick."

Jay holds out a hand that's steady as a rock despite how much he's had to drink. "Still think you could drink me under the table?" He asks playfully. He may be drunk but he's still Jay.

With a grin, Sherral dips his head to kiss Jay's knuckles quickly. "Aye, I reckon I could."

Jay shifts to pull Sherral close, his other arm draped around his waist. "It's a pity I've got a head-start on you then. Or do you plan to take advantage of that?"

"I didn't know we were doing the drinking contest now," Sherral says with a laugh, sliding an arm loosely around Jay. "Otherwise I'd have made sure to keep pace with you."

"I'm sure there are other ways you could keep pace with me." Jay leers, making the most of their closeness to lean against Sherral.

Sherral laughs, giving Jay a quick kiss on the temple. "I could. But I'm not convinced you've not had one or two too many. And you're meant to be serving drinks, aye?"

Jay catches Sherral's eye, abruptly serious. "I'm more than sober enough to give informed consent. You can trust me on that."

He lets go and drifts back to the bar. "Yeah, I guess. But my shift can't last much longer. I've been here a while."

"Good thing, that. Both of those," Sherral says, walking over to press a quick kiss to Jay's neck.

The kiss makes Jay relax a little, his hand resting on the small of Sherral's back. "Come back to my room with me? After my shift?"

"Aye, of course," Sherral says, lifting one hand to brush it through Jay's hair.

Jay turns his hand into touch, enjoying the warmth of it. He nods to the pool table. "Another round while we wait for Madam Bar to wake up?"

"Aye, by all means, if you're willing to put up with my relative lack of skill there."

Jay chuckles and steals a kiss. "I'm sure you'll make it up with your skills in other areas." He teases.

About halfway through the game, a napkin appears on the counter and Jay laughs when he reads it. "She says I drank more than I sold."

"I am entirely unsurprised," Sherral says.

Jay steals another kiss, and another bottle of whiskey. "What can I say? I might have thrown a few games tonight."
