The door opens again to Quentin who quickly disguise himself in a magical scent of heather and steel as he curses, "Maeve's tits, your timing is awful."

There are scratches on his cheek and hands, he and Raj were sparring in Goldengreen when Toby and the Duke entered. He had been meaning to get ready to head back to Shadowed Hills, not here. That's why he's grumbling as he heads towards the counter, as long as he's here, he can wash his face.

"Maeve's tits?" Michael repeats, eyebrows raised. "That's a new one."

The Maeve of his world... would probably quite like it, actually.

He turns to see who's commenting and realizes that wasn't the wisest thing to say here, "I heard it from someone."

"Be careful where you say it", he advises seriously. "Here, it's safe, but if you got the attention of my world's Maeve..."

He's met her. He has no particular desire to do so again.

Quentin stares as he tries to process that, he only knows of one person who knows Maeve and even that was long ago.

"Probably different worlds", he qualifies. "The Fae are still very much a presence in mine, if you know about the supernatural side of things."

"Oh, they don't seem to be in a lot of worlds here,"

He stands up straighter as he realizes its another world. Which is good because no one suspects him but also disconcerting.

He nods. "Or at least not known."

"Most supernatural creatures tend to be safer when they're hidden. At least that's how it is in all the books I've read."

"In my world, going public about it would be considered the nuclear option. A very last resort."

"Do you know any of them?" The way he phrased that, it seems like he might.

"We've met. I have as few dealings with them as possible."

It's not that he dislikes them, exactly, but they can't be trusted.

"Why? I mean if they're in hiding, why do you come into contact with them?"

Clearly he doesn't really want to but he does.

"They're not exactly in hiding, they live in their own dimension and sometimes come into ours. Occasionally, when I was in that line of work, I used to catch one of their... less bright... individuals hurting humans. Or sometimes I had reason to meet with one or other of the queens."

"What line of work?"

He's not surprised to hear that other Fae hurt humans and queens makes sense.

"I was a Knight of the Cross", he says matter of factly. "With a very specific purpose, but often it was broader."

"I've never heard of that before. Is it like being a paladin or something like that?"

The title seems like something older.

"Something like. But the order is very small - there's never more than three at a time."

"Did you have a lot to do?"

Heroes and knights always seem to be busy, Toby is as she's called in when there's trouble.

He laughs quietly.

"Son, it never ended. I counted myself lucky if the trouble was in Chicago - that's my hometown."

"I can see that. There's always something new going wrong. My aunt's a private investigator, there's always something she needs to help with. I'm from San Francisco."

"Does she deal mostly with the ordinary kind of problems, or... other things?"

"It depends on what's needed,"

He's not going to let on what he is with this man yet, he doesn't think it will be safe.

"Of course", Michael says, inclining his head and not pressing. "And the other kind of problems can be very complicated."

"They've all been complicated from what I've seen and horrible."

"Most of the creatures out there that kill humans, do it to eat them."

There are exceptions, which are actually harder to deal with.
