milliways_bar | Milli-timed to Tuesday the 28th

The bar room of Milliways is always full of sound - the clatter of dishes and clink of glasses, chairs being scooted back or further in, footsteps upon the floor, rats squeaking, the background murmur of conversations overlapping one another.

But tonight the main door to the bar opens to the mouth of an city alleyway, to a caucophony of noise and music, full of seething crowds and colorful parade floats, the smells of food and sweat and smoke and beer and those colorful fruity drinks sold in yard-long plastic glasses with umbrellas in them. Mardi Gras is in full swing and New Orleans has outdone itself this time.

Yrael enters, trailing laughter from a section of the crowd on the other side. His white hair is decorated with purple, gold and green feathers, his pale face partially hidden by a sharp, glittery cat mask of gold, behind which his green eyes are bright. Over his white shirt this evening he wears a shiny waistcoat of purple, gold, green, and black. It's clearly party time, big time, show time -

"And then some!" he grins, seeing Milliways. "Fat Tuesday is upon us, Milliways! Welcome to Mardi Gras! Come, dance, explore! Laissez les bons temps rouler!"

Yrael will make sure the door stays open for any party-goer who would like to partake in the joie de vivre, and the Bar can certainly provide a change of costume...

"I am unsure of the origin of the pancakes." They're good to eat, though! "This reminds me of New Year festivals. And also of the festival of Holi, with all these costumes and colors!"

"I loved the New Years festival during my time in Nippon. The colourful little cakes and the way the children dressed up and danced about."

He smiles as a shower of beads falls on a girl willing to take her top off. "This may be less of a children's event but I love the vitality of it."

Seimei eyes the woman putting on her new beads. "That particular ritual is, I think, very unique to this place and time of year."

It's certainly not something they do back home in Japan.

"So it would seem." Sinric laughs warmly, licking powdered sugar off his fingers. "But a harmless one, it seems. A celebration of sensuality and sexuality."

Seimei finishes chewing her beignet. "It seems more like cheap thrills for plastic beads, possibly with copious amounts of alcohol involved, but I suppose that depends on one's perspective." She takes a drink of punch. "It also seems like a good way to do something that one regrets - especially in these times, when it is so easy to take and share photographs!"

Those girls flashing for beads may learn a very hard lesson for doing so.

Sinric's not terribly familiar with photographs, or their implications for shame. But then, when it comes to celebrating life and joy, he's not overly focused on regret. "Perhaps." He shrugs.

"Not that we can or should do anything to stop them," Seimei says, as two other girls pull up their tops in unison to a shower of beads. "Ah, to be young and foolish again. I think it is time to hunt for crepes." With Nutella!

"Your eyes and your heart carry your ages, my dear friend." Sinric smiles, touching Seimei's hand lightly. "Yes, indeed. Lets go hunting such things."

And so the two set off, searching for crepes. They aren't in any particular hurry, though, and there are many interesting distractions along the way. They pose for pictures, at the request of tourists and at least a couple of professional photographers; they take pictures of/with other people in interesting costumes; they locate a lost child and reunite him with his parents. They do, eventually, find a little cafe that specializes in crepes.

"Here we are! Are you interested in trying one with Nutella, Sinric-san?" Seimei's treat, of course.

Sinric has no shyness about being photographed. In fact he rather radiates under the attention.

But it is exhausting work and crepes are a welcome sight. "Very much so, yes." He smiles brightly.

Seimei orders two crepes with Nutella and fruit. They watch the proprietor of the little shop make crepes on a crepe iron. The crepes are then spread with Nutella, sprinkled with fruit, and folded on paper plates. Seimei exchanges money for the crepes, picks up a couple of plastic forks and napkins, and puts them on a little table just outside the cafe.

"Your kindness knows no bounds, my dear friend." Sinric beams. It's hard to believe this is the same half dead creature who was lashed to the tree so few months ago.

He tries a morels, his eyes wide. "Oh! That's lovely!"

"I will be sure to give you a jar when we return to Milliways," Seimei says. "It gives me the greatest happiness to see you enjoy a humble gift of mine, Sinric-san."

"Joy should be found in all things. Small and large." Sinric beams, "And sharing a new flavour with a dear friend is hardly a small joy for me."
