It came to Bonnie's attention recently, while she was helping supply pie for Life Support, that some folks around here are short of food.

So, today, she has set up a table on one side of the bar, with another large baking of pies, plus some of her spare apples, and some jars of jams and pickles. She carefully covers the pies to stop any errant flies buzzing over them.

She sets up a sign behind the table.

Are you a keen gardener who would like to trade one food for another?

Do you have a lot of spare food that will otherwise go to waste?

Are you someone who just needs no excuse to bake?

TAKE WHAT YOU NEED

Trade crops and avoid waste. If you are hungry, if you are short of food, please, help yourself. No eligibility questions asked. Any spare food at the end will be given to the bar to be distributed later to those who are hungry.

Suggested items: Fruit and veg, baked goods, dried goods, canned goods
Please no: Out of date food, foods that need to be kept hot or cold, items inedible to humans (or at very least please label as such), magic prank food, blood products or products made from humans, medicines, junk.'

There are takeaway boxes and bowls and spoons provided.

Bodhi jumps a little, but then steadies himself with a smile. "The Negamo. Sorry, it makes people sneeze if they're not use to it."

"But it smells delicious!" the watcher says. "I've never smelled anything remotely like it. Where is it from?"

"Dantooine and Honoghr mostly. But it's grown all over. It's good with gamey meats. It gives the meat a good, spicy flavour."

"Where are those places?" the stranger asks. "Africa?"

He shakes his head. "Planets in the outer rim territories. Not Earth. If that's where you mean?"

"Yes, I meant Earth," the watcher says. "Planets. Orbiting what sun -- our own?"

"I doubt it. Another galaxy it think. I've never been able to find Earth on a star map I recognise. I was a cargo pilot, flying from system to system."

"Between stars?" the watcher says, fascinated. "These are spices from space?"

Wow.

He nods. "The world I grew up on was barren. Almost nothing edible grew there. What we had, we had to import or grow ourselves."

"What kind of food did you cook?" the watcher asks, now fully fascinated.

From space!!

"Whatever we could get our hands on, really. Mostly simple food. I grew up in the slums so you took what you could get. Things that lasted mostly. Grains, dried and cured meats, freeze dried vegetables. Things that were cheap to import."

"My grandmother adopted me and my sisters when I was ten. She taught me how to cook properly. How to use spices and made the most of even simple ingredients."

"These spices smell wonderful," the stranger says. "Like promises from far-away worlds, and mysteries from beyond the stars. Your grandmother must have been a very special lady."

"That she was." He smiles fondly. "I miss her greatly."

He shakes himself and gestures for the man to join here. "I'm Bodhi. Bodhi Rook. Would you like to try some?"

"I am Dorian Gray, and very eager to do so," the watcher says. "I haven't seen you before, because I would certainly remember. But I haven't been coming very often lately."

"I've been here..." He trails off, trying to calculate it by the local orbit, "Half a rotation? Half a year. But I didn't, I didn't come out of my room much, in the first while."

He catches the eye of a rat and orders a sample of negamo bantha jerky and some of the blue milk cheese with crackers.

"That is food from space?" Dorian asks. "Oh thank you very much in advance, dear chap -- that will be such a unique experience."

The chap is a unique experience as well, a very sweet Subcontinental beauty with the most amazing eyelashes Dorian has ever seen. Probably.

"Not space exactly. Just common on the moon I'm from."

The plate arrives and Bodhi smiles. The Bar has been throughful in what it send them. A plate full of Jedhean standards.

"This is dried bantha meat, sharp bantha cheese - I make this myself. The jam is made from quinberry. It's quite tart but it goes well with the meat. And the cookies are dried fruit and nuts. My grandma's specialty. Or and bantha milk." He gestures to the two glasses of blue milk. "I can spice that with sand ginger to make a drink a bit like earth chocolate."

"A bantha is some kind of space cow?" Dorian guesses.

"Larger than the cows I've seen. They grow to about two or three metres tall and are covered in long hair. With big horns that curl either side of their head. I'm told the natives of Tatooine ride them."

"They sound more like yaks, but yes, same general direction," Dorian nods, taking a piece of the cheese.

"I've never seen a yak." He makes a note to ask Teja about yaks. "Where do they live?"

"In the Himalayan mountains north of India, where it's very high and very cold," Dorian says. "I don't think people ride them, but they carry all the burdens in addition to providing dairy products. Well, milk, and the people there make dairy products, of course. Yak butter is very important; they put it in their tea."

"Sounds like Banthas, yes. But they can live in hot and cold climates. And harsh deserts. Which is why they were brought to Jedha originally."

"What do they eat, in the desert?" Dorian asks, taking another piece of the cheese.

He offers the man a glass of blue milk, tinted almost lavender with spices. It tastes nutty but with an edge of citrus and ginger. Likes a Christmas pudding milkshake.

"There are plants and insects that grown under the sand. They graze on them. They have long tongues for burrowing and hooves for digging."
